In Russia’s side it could be a smart move to open another front. They likely wouldn’t gain any territory into Western Ukraine from it, but Ukraine might pull more forces from the East to shore up Western defenses, giving Russian troops a better chance at pushing through Eastern defenses.
NATO members are now talking about future potential for “boots on the ground” in support of Ukraine, and this may very well be related to Western Ukraine defense.

Russians cannot produce—they can only take what others have created. And if they cannot take it, they destroy it. It’s much easier to destroy than build.
