Just now: John Kirby suggests that the $300 billion in Russian assets frozen in the West could be used to meet Ukraine’s immediate needs, not just long term reconstruction. Maybe I missed something previously, but that’s a shift in the Biden Admin’s thinking on this topic.

  1. There’s two things that Russia hates losing.

One is money, anyone take a guess what the other is?

  2. Remember the joke from 1942: an American walks into a pub in England orders a pint, and complains it is flat. The publican says what do you expect? It’s been waiting for you for two years ‘ What I am saying is that this should have been done 2 years ago

  3. Except that US has only about 5 billion from this sum, so what they talk have very little value.

  4. One of the biggest hypocrisies of 2022-2023 years – imitation that such actions are not planned, probably before the war, coordinated actions of the West, so more “controllable” exchange Ukrainian lives on “bleeding Russia”, but some real 2 years disputes, reasoning, disagreements, creating of procedures, and so on.

The West still 40% of World economy, hundreds of trillions of assets, technological leadership in all industrial and post-industrial categories. Not even biggest economic Trust Capital, but undisputed economic Trust Capital.

The idea that transfer of such, already indefinitely frozen, money to Ukraine in any substantial way would affect the West economically – just absurd.

  5. Yay to this. There won’t be any long-term needs if they don’t get additional funding now.

  6. Putler’s response: This would cause war with NATO because we are not yet at war with NATO, I was totally pretending when I said we were, this time it’s for realsies!!!

    Medvedev’s response: NUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUUKES. *hiccup*

  7. Better to support them while at war so they can defeat Russia than to worry about the future.

  8. Won’t be nothing to reconstruct if Russians not kicked out.

  9. I have been telling this all this time:

Republicans want a large chunk of that money going to American weapons industry.

I hope to show them the finger, the EU that holds most of it biys weapons for Ukraine in Europe and somewhere else.

Fuck the Republicans. I hope they end up fighting each other and the GOP gets divided.

  10. They are realizing that they have to think out of the box. The tried and true methods of sanctions aren’t working very well. Money talks.

  11. Day 733
