Hi, all. I’m Emma Ockerman. I work in audience engagement at Nikkei Asia. I wanted to share this article with you:
>SEOUL — North Korea has sent 6,700 shipping containers of ammunition to Russia in recent months, potentially providing over 3 million 152-millimeter artillery shells, South Korea’s defense chief says.
>
>Russia is expected to continue to provide technological assistance for North Korea’s military surveillance satellite program, Defense Minister Shin Won-sik told South Korean media on Monday. Pyongyang is seen launching another satellite as soon as late March, Shin said.
>
>South Korea’s National Intelligence Service had estimated in November that the North transferred more than 1 million artillery rounds to Moscow.Russia has been using 10,000 artillery shells per day in its war against Ukraine, The Wall Street Journal reported in January, citing data from the Royal United Services Institute, a British think tank. This is five times the volume currently used by Ukraine.
>
>Moscow has resolved its shortage of artillery shells from last summer, when Ukraine was using 7,000 rounds per day versus Russia’s 5,000.
>
>The International Institute for Strategic Studies, another British think tank, also thinks North Korean artillery shells are propping up Russia’s war efforts.
>
>Since North Korean leader Kim Jong Un met with Russian President Vladimir Putin in September, Pyongyang has supplied Moscow with at least a month’s worth of shells, according to IISS.
>
>Shin said North Korea’s munitions factories are running at roughly 30% capacity due to electricity shortages. But factories supplying artillery shells to Russia are operating at full capacity, suggesting that Kim’s regime is prioritizing munitions supplies to Moscow.
>
>Russia has sent 30% more containers to North Korea than it has received from the North, Shin said. The North Korea-bound containers were likely mainly filled with food, he said.
>
>Analysts previously said North Korea had been suffering from food insecurity since the coronavirus pandemic. Now it is believed that North Korea is maintaining stable food supplies, Shin said.
Thank you!
Outproduced by North Korea… well done, the West, well done /s
These issues finally seem to getting resolved somewhat, but obviously it takes time and therefore it’s two years to late to start it.
The problem for Ukraine is that NATO countries don’t rely on mass artillery bombardments, so they no longer sustain the capacity to produce such large numbers of shells.
Crunching the numbers, that’s 25 shells per dead Russian soldier so far.
Anything is an artillery shell if you try hard enough. I wonder how many end up causing accidents.
Time for South Korea to show the North who makes more and better artillery shells, one would hope.
Sounds like the time is approaching for SK to finally clean up the house up north.
If the West can’t send enough conventional weapons, then it should start sending to Ukraine components of more conventional types of WMD than one of the biggest in the World quantities of nuclear waste.
Its crazy to think about that the North Koreans must maintain their ability to level Seoul in case of war, which is their doctrine.
That means the combined West couldnt deliver 1 million while North Korea could deliver 3 million AND still have enough for themselves..
May the gunpowder be shoddy and the barrels break. Slava Ukraine!
NATO…we can maybe do 8600 this month.
Trumps good friends are sticking together.
3 meter artillery shells? Thats some big guns man.
The sad reality of modern world seems to be: (1) Giving up your nukes = giving up your independence. If you don’t have nukes, get them asap. (2) Authoritarian regimes are more reliable partners in time of real peril. West and USA are mostly promises unkept.
Really sad to see the world in this state 🙁
Kim junk un….
Nothing like using old powder charges in a tube. Let’s hope they blow every artillery piece they have before they figure out it’s the old powder causing the over pressure ruptures.
Holy shit, fucking George W. Bush was right about the motherfucking Axis of goddamn Evil….
Shitbirds of a shitfeather, Bobandy.
Meanwhile the whole of Europe can’t even send 1m artillery shells
Can we all stop pretending that it’s just North Korea and say out loud that North Korea would never lift a finger without China’s backing?
May they all blow up in their goddamn faces
Rock beats scissors.
Airplanes beats artillery.
Prior reports indicated that North Korean shells had a high rate of duds, and were also quite inaccurate. The dud rate is probably a bigger deal, as accuracy doesn’t seem to matter all that much to the Russians, anyway. Mostly, they are just hitting with volume, not accuracy. Hopefully these will be in the 80% dud range, as was previously speculated.
This is an article from back in November when North Korea sent another large batch of artillery shells.
I just wish the Western allies would just properly supply Ukraine already, and teach Russia a lesson about invading their neighbors. All this money spent on weapons, and we finally have a chance to do something unambiguously good with them… but we can’t seem to commit. Very frustrating and disheartening.
So Ukraine is doing the entire Europe and East Asia a favor by draining NK and Russian resources
3M is making artillery shells? Their blue painters tape is good stuff.
Betting less than half will actually work.
Meanwhile in the USA:
Literally everyone else: *”Hey could we send Ukraine some guns and shit, it would help them out and would be good for our defense industry.”*
Republicans: *”NO! DEMORATS BAD!”*
Everyone else: *”The fuck does that has to do with Ukraine?”*
Republicans: *”FUCK YOU AND YOUR GAY DOG! PWN THE LIBS!! TRUMP RULES!!!11″*
This should be marked NSFW. You can’t just have a thumbnail with 2 arseholes in it.
