**This interview was recorded in June of 2022. Later this week, we will post an update on Katia, her husband, and her family.**
Katia was born and raised in Mariupol. There, she fell in love, got married and had two sons. In 2014, with the start of the Russo-Ukrainian war, her husband joined the National Guard of Ukraine, and a few years later, became a soldier in the Azov Regiment.
At the start of a full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, Katia was also in Mariupol. On March 4, she had to move to a shelter at the Azovstal plant together with her children. The family lived in the dungeon for almost two months. The territory of the plant was under constant fire conducted by the Russian army, so it was almost impossible to get out. The Ukrainian military tried in every way to help civilians: they obtained food, heated water, and visited bunkers. On May 1, after a long journey that included going through a Russian “filtration camp”, some civilians managed to flee. Now she’s relatively safe on the territory controlled by Ukraine. She is waiting for her husband to come back from Russian captivity.
She’s endured so much!
