It was pretty clear from his answers and body language that he just didn’t have a legitimate answer for what he said and how he contradicts it today. The obvious speculation would be that he was paid to say something or tell people he said it, but won’t confirm it under oath. There could be a couple of other possibilities, but that’s the most obvious.
