it dumbfounds me when drivers zoom straight past pedestrians waiting at the zebra crossing (especially when they’re outside a school :/ )
i was waiting outside the school crossing (this is daylight, mind you) and three drivers zoomed past me. it baffles me how they passed their driving tests. it’s also scary too. on some occasions, i was waiting to cross with other children and these selfish drivers drove past without a care.

They don’t have to stop for you. Rule 19 in the Highway code. Passed my test two weeks ago so still fresh in my mind 🙂
There is zero enforcement, and the Highway Code only indicates that drivers “should” stop.
This is a rule and isn’t meant to be optional, but is not interpreted that way by drivers (or the police, since they don’t appear to enforce anything).
Stopping at a red light now seems to be optional in a lot of East London
Just stand there with your phone in your hand, pointing in their direction. They soon stop.
I just step out. If they don’t stop, I give the car a good slap. Sometimes I get a good whack on the side mirror.
I have a near miss at least twice a week on the *far* lane of Zebra Crossings. I’m already halfway across the road and they get angry they have to stop. Where the fuck else am I going? Do they expect me to go half way and turn back? Do a little song and dance routine.
Its my dream to actually be run over by one of these idiots. think of the compensation i could get. Maybe even enough to afford a deposit on a little flat somewhere.
> it baffles me how they passed their driving tests
Here’s a hint, they probably didn’t
Gets like that. 1 driver saw that you let 1 go and the others assumed you’re just standing there
There’s a terribly designed zebra crossing on a blind corner where one of my friends used to live where drivers just go straight through at 20mph (well usually faster but 20mph is the speed limit…) without even slowing to check for a moment if there’s a pedestrian already stepping out. I’m convinced somebody will be mown down on it some day, because the quality of driving round London in general is so awful.

^^ imagine being in the left hand lane driving towards that acute bend with the zebra tucked round behind it, PLUS there’s usually some trees/undergrowth grown out to further obscure it. Then imagine rather than being cautious as hell (which you should be), instead giving no shits and driving at full speed without checking.
There are a couple of crossings on tower bridge road, that are designed so that when there’s traffic, the cars can’t see the crossing is now green, and they drive across it loads of times a day, when my daughter was in a buggy it was not nice to cross.
For me it’s when you stop at a zebra crossing and they don’t say thank you . I know I’m obliged to stop but being polite doesn’t hurt .
Nearly as bad as knobs who speed up as the light has turned red
Less enforcement means these sociopaths just do what they like. I’m convinced driving behaviour is getting worse.
I’ve had an Uber driver shout at me once whilst they drove through the zebra crossing I was in the middle of crossing.
The best one was the guy who accelerated into the zebra crossing while giving me the finger out the window.
Like, how dare I cross the road in front of him at the legally designated place?
I nearly got hit in ’23 when I was more than half way across one and visibly pregnant. Only avoided it because I danced about 5 steps back, off the crossing. It’s a crossing on a reasonably busy road but with traffic lights 30 seconds one way and calming measures 10 seconds in the other. The driver was coming from a road right next to the crossing and had been stationary when I started across. The area also had a very popular park vet (edit: very) near and a nursery. I’m genuinely shocked no-one has been hit on it yet.
It’s like the recent Highway Code change (2 years ago?) “At a junction you should give way to pedestrians crossing or waiting to cross a road into which or from which you are turning.” Feels like you’re taking your life in your hands with a gamble. Will they stop? Won’t they?
I had that in the supermarket last week.
If it weren’t for my daughter sitting on the trolley, I happily stick the trolley out so they crash into it.
