Common on estates built at the same time. There are streets on an estate near us with Shipping Area names: Biscay, Forth, Cromarty, Trafalgar etc. Simpler to pick a theme than come up with random names.
Welcome to new build naming themes
In Rochester kent near what used to be the short brothers factory there’s a road named shorts way, just off shorts way can be found Stirling close and Sunderland close.
Pretty common. In my hometown there’s an area named all after trees, such as Birch Grove, Laburnum Road, Lilac Grove etc
Few places in Reading have themes. Cav heights has names related to North Yorkshire.
Somewhere else has Welsh cities.
Leicester has a row of terraced streets named after nuts
There’s a town in Somerset which has discworld themed street names.
Themed names are common on newer estates!
There is also an Ayrton Senna Road in tilehurst where I believe the man himself used to live!
Themed streets are not a new thing.
I used to live on a street group that were all named after early first world war battles, built during that war.
Local council estates built from the 60’s onwards also have loads of themes.
Sometimes new build estates pay tribute to previous industrial or cultural links to the same site. Maybe this area had something to do with spice import or processing in the past ?
Nothing will beat where the South Yorkshire Police head office is in Sheffield.
It’s on Letsby Avenue.
In Reading I think Bay Route would be a more apt name.
There’s an estate near where I live which has a Dickens theme.
I quite like the idea really.
Bunch of herbs round that way
This post is so wholesome.
In docklands in London, you can find Coriander Ave, Nutmeg Lane etc – with the DLR called ‘East India’ due to the [East India Company](https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/East_India_Company) docks that used to be there which were part of the spice trade.
It’s where all the spice heads live
.
Most of Milton Keynes has themed street names. These include birds of prey, gemstones, stars of the silver screen, painters, lakes, butterflies, scientists, islands, maritime history and mountains.
There a “Fanny hands lane” in Lincolnshire.
Same with Bulford. There’s an estate with places from North Africa and Italy there in honor of veterans.
I noticed they wisely didn’t name one of them “Cumin Close”
the estate i live on is named after towns in Northumberland, except one of them is spelt wrong and it really bothers me, it’s missing an R. the estate where i used to work (worked at someone’s house, support worker) used to be a golf… what’s the word? you know… a golf place… where people would play golf… so all of the roads are named after golf things, like Fairway, Green, etc.
In sittingbourne they have gems: emerald crescent, moonstone square, amethyst drive, fire opal way, onyx drive etc
In basingstoke there are streets named after the beatles. Lennon way, McCartney walk. Its in hatch Warren near the school if you want to look.
I love spotting areas of themed names, they are super common, but I find them really interesting!
Especially ones that are made from local history, like famous people or inventions from that location.
I see a lot that are themed with birds, trees, historical figures, fish, planets and authors.
New build area? In keynsham there is one new estate with Greek named streets; Aesop, Homer, Hercules, Alexander, Alcina. Next door is another estate with bird names; Linnet, Chaffinch, Skylark, Goldcrest.
Edit: forgot that a third adjacent estate is tree names, birch, acacia, oak tree, cedar, bit boring that though.
Town planner was in the kitchen at the time he had to think of road names glanced over at his spice rack…
Adamsdown in Cardiff has some fun themes.
By the infirmary there’s Orbit ,Star, Eclipse, Comet and Planet Street. Follow Constellation Street down and you’ll then reach Gold, Silver, Copper, Iron and Tin street, and then Sapphire, Emerald, Ruby, Topaz, Diamond and Pearl Street.
There’s a place near me that has named all of their streets after Lord of the Rings!
Just had a look and there’s Gandalf’s Ride, Arwen Grove, Great Smials, Hobbiton Hill, Elronds Rest and Shireborn Vale.
There’s an avation-based estate in Reading too near the Museum. Spitfire Way, Comet Way, Miles Way, Hawker Way, Viscount Way, Victor Way and Hurricane Way. Mohawk, Kittyhawk, Wright, Orville, Nimrod, Lysander and Tiger Closes too,. Very cool.
How did you ever find the thyme to do this
Estate in Northamptonshire with flower names like Crocus Way, Daffodil Drive, Fuchsia Way and Bluebell Rise. It’s called Greenacre.
The estate I live on was built in two phases, phase one is Greek mythology themed with names like Colossus, Neptune, Minotaur, Achilles, etc, and phase two is space ship themed and has Enterprise, Normandy, Babylon, Phoenix, etc, with the road that runs through the middle named Apollo to join the two themes together
We’ve got an Asgard Way, Odin Court, Heimdall Road, Utgard Way, and Frejya Croft.
