On this day in 1978 the last Volkswagen Beetle made in Germany leaves VW’s plant in Emden.

  1. Beetle production in Latin America continued until 2003.

VW announced the end of production in June 2003, and the final original Type 1 VW Beetle (No. 21,529,464) rolled off the production line at Puebla, Mexico, on 30 July 2003, 65 years after its original launch.

This last Beetle, nicknamed El Rey, was delivered to the company’s museum in Wolfsburg, Germany.

  2. Just imagine how rich Tatra could have been if they went for licence fee per car, instead of a one time payment.

  3. In Finland the Beetle is called ”Adolf’s revenge”. Some people say that is because the drivers make an involuntary nazi salute when they check if the fans blow warm air to the windshield.

  4. This car was iconic in my family. My late grandfather has one and my father has one. I went to school in it during pretty much through the entire 90s.

  5. Every time I see the beetle I remember James May’s rant on it. I can’t hate the little Herby, but I kinda do agree with James.

  6. If the Beetle launched VW, then its successor, the Golf, is what cemented its position in the automotive industry.

  7. We had two of these when I was a child. Good times. Beautiful car, but really slow, would always break down, and ate a lot of fuel (and had like 25 l tank capacity so you would do a lot of refueling).

The luggage compartment was amazing though. The engine is in the back, so you have tons of space in the front.

  8. My dad had yellow one, my mums was orange.

I think both with their first real jobs…just went to the dealership and bought one.

  9. Man it’s wild, I grew up in the 90’s and saw these all the time here in California and just realized I haven’t seen one on the streets in ages! It’s like they all just vanished at the same time.

  10. Are the VW Busses still being built in Brazil? It was wicked seeing classics driving around brand new by their Police forces. Back in 08, I think?

  11. I have never understood the appeal myself, but I’m fairly sure it must be hidden somewhere in it. Sadly I have never had the chance to drive one of them or even ride one of them as passenger, so my opinion isn’t worth the bytes I used typing it.

  12. This picture is not the 1978 model. If i am not mistaken this is a pre-1974 model. Around that time the front indicator lights moved into the bumper.
