  1. Can’t be long before we have the VIP/MPs lane on motorways and special wards in NHS hospitals at this rate

  2. > An HMRC spokesperson said: “PD1 is a dedicated helpline for those who need a greater level of protection due to their identity or job. It has nothing to do with people’s wealth.”
    >
    > They added that PD1 records were held separately, with only a small number of staff able to access them, and there were usually seven people answering calls to this helpline.

I’m sure I read about this decades ago, it’s basically an additional security level so run by a specific team. It’s not so much about skipping queues, but they are using a smaller & lower volume department.

  3. Don’t we all deserve the same level of security when it comes to HMRC?

  4. This makes sense. More vetting can be easily done for staff handling issues for certain people on a smaller dedicated team. I don’t see a problem with this to be honest

  5. Who decides that one needs a special line? If it’s not wealth, then surely anyone could apply for a PD1

  6. It’s not actually good, though, because it means you can’t use any of the online gateways or anything.

*Everything* you care to do *has* to be done via this special phone line. Records are restricted and can’t be accessed by anyone else.

  7. I’m PD1 and it’s not some fancy luxury, it’s just that regular staff can’t access our records. I think I speak for everyone with PD1 records when I say that it’s a massive pain in the arse and nobody would choose it if given the option. It’s not a shortcut, it’s an extra hurdle.

  8. There’s so much wrong in that article. Whoever wrote it either has no understanding of what they’re writing about or are deliberately trying to rile people up.

  9. It’s a higher security lane, not a fast lane.

HMRC staff have to use PD1 when they have tax queries of their own, for example.

  10. I’m a very vocal critic of HMRC, but after reading the context behind this it isn’t one of the many fights that needs picking.
