West End show facing furious backlash for ‘black-only’ theatre night

  1. So two days in a 3 month run. It is hardly a big deal. This is like men complaining that the swimming pool has a women only session once a week.

If it was a black only every showing then sure it’s a wtf. However if they really think that some people will only go when it is ‘safe’ then they might be misguided but it is hardly the crime of the century.

  2. As a drive to encourage black audiences into theatre I’m all for it.

Will it piss people off, yes. But overall, I think it’s worth it. Just hope the backlash isn’t bigger than the gain. Sometimes the methods used in the push for diversity aren’t always that well thought out though.

  3. Well, he managed to get blanket press coverage for £0 spent. not bad.

  4. How many redditors calling this segregation and racist against white people actually go to the theatre?

  5. There are some key details – the article does say that white people will not be turned away if they booked, and the black only nights are for two nights out of a 3month run. Also, the play is about slavery, so having the black only night is not just to encourage attendance from that community but also to avoid feeling uncomfortable about the subject. I know for example my South Asian cousin has talked about feeling a bit uncomfortable watching RRR with his white British friends as if he could feel their pity/awkwardness.

BUT, despite all that, how can they not possibly see that the publicity alone from framing it as a black only event does more harm to the cause than good? I’m all for trying to be inclusive, but you need to do it in a smart way in today’s sensitive political and social landscape. This just isn’t it.

That said, I highly doubt there’s “furious” backlash beyond the few usual suspects on Twitter. The garbage article for example literally cited one twitter user’s comment. Frankly, shame on OP for posting this low-effort short article which has more ads than paragraphs and barely any information, just to try to ragebait.

  6. As someone who watched ‘Daddy’ I’m not sure I want to watch Slave Play but do not have a problem with this at all. What dates so I can book?
