The 11-Oscar nominated saucy absurdist comedy, Poor Things, from Disney’s Searchlight, is hitting Hulu on March 7, days before the Oscar ceremony on March 10.
Talk about a long-theatrical window to Hulu: Poor Things will hit the Disney OTT service 90 days after opening in cinemas. Poor Things hit digital yesterday, Feb. 27.
The news comes in the wake of the movie crossing the $100M mark at the global box office. As Deadline told you, Searchlight co-head David Greenbaum became President, Disney Live Action and 20th Century Studios recently, taking over for Sean Bailey who is departing the studio. Stateside, Poor Things which is from director Yorgos Lanthimos has almost made as much stateside as his previous Searchlight Oscar winning title, The Favorite, $32.9M to $34.3M — pretty good for an R-rated arthouse movie nowadays.
The movie, which stars and is produced by Emma Stone, features her as Bella Baxter (Stone), a young woman brought back to life by the brilliant and unorthodox scientist Dr. Godwin Baxter (Willem Dafoe). Under Baxter’s protection, Bella is eager to learn. Hungry for the worldliness she is lacking, Bella runs off with Duncan Wedderburn (Mark Ruffalo), a slick and debauched lawyer, on a whirlwind adventure across the continents. Free from the prejudices of her times, Bella grows steadfast in her purpose to stand for equality and liberation.
Stone won the Golden Globe for Best Actress Comedy/Musical for Poor Things, with the movie taking Best Comedy/Musical as well. Stone was also one of the five BAFTAs won for Poor Things. Among the pic’s Oscar noms are Best Picture, Best Actress Stone, Director Lanthimos and Best Supporting Actor Mark Ruffalo.
Movie was so good
Do not watch this with your parents, unless you have a weird relationship with your parents.
I saw this 3 times at the movies I loved it so much.
Also available for free on the interwebs
Took my mom for her birthday to the movies! Good thing I had a couple edibles beforehand because it was mostly just a porn with an annoying fish eye camera that was like an AI generated fever dream of a movie made only to get awards. All the acting was legit but shouldn’t have watched it with my mom
I’m curious about this movie, but also scared to watch it, because I hated The Favourite. I couldn’t even make it halfway through that movie because it was so weird.
I’m furious jumping for joy.
There’s some heavy pedophilic and exploitative undertones in this movie…
