This is one of the most appalling criminal cases that deserves to be known in detail by all Cypriots. This is what happened in chronological order and with sources:

Soldier Thanasis Nikolaou was found dead on 9/9/2005. (https://www.philenews.com/eidiseis/article/511535/skinothetisan-tin-aftoktonia-tou-thanasi-nikolaou-to-2005/)

The coroner’s (Panikos Stavrianos) post-mordem report pointed out that the death of the soldier was due to suicide https://politis.com.cy/714150/article.
This case was considered closed for more than a decade, despite the victim’s family’s protests and requests for re-examination.

Ιn December 2020 Thanasis’ body was finally exhumed. In the post-mortem re-examination it was discovered that the reason of death was clearly murder by strangulation. In October 2021 the Attorney General ordered a criminal investigation to be commenced, which was concluded in September 2022.

In September 2022 Stavrianos requested protection from the police. The reason was never publicised. (https://www.philenews.com/kipros/koinonia/article/447190/prostasia-apo-tin-astinomia-zita-o-iatrodikastis-stavrianos/Stavrianos)

Stavrianos was a Member of Parliament with AKEL between 2006 and 2016 and a vice president of the parliamentary committee against Crime and Drugs (https://www.polignosi.com/cgibin/hweb?-A=53531&-V=limmata)

In June 2023 the Attorney General decided not to prosecute anyone regarding this case (e.g. negligent coroner and police officers) and the family filed a private criminal case (https://www.philenews.com/kipros/koinonia/article/1339714/pai-gia-idiotikes-pinikes-dioxis-i-ikogenia-tou-thanasi-nikolaou/)

What has been revealed in the recent court hearing is nothing less than appalling. Mr Stavrianos is accused by the family, not only of being negligent but of knowingly lying regarding several matters: for example, regarding Thanasis’ alleged fall from the 30 meter bridge (he had no fractures), regarding a supposed river that brought sand into his mouth (there was no water that day in the river), that he omitted reporting clear bruises on Thanasis’ body. Most importantly he claimed that the hyoid bone was normal, which was untrue and perhaps the most important evidence that revealed that the cause of death was strangulation. These are the facts of the case. What are your thoughts and feelings about what happened? Do you think that justice will be served at last?

  1. I don’t think justice will be served. This will just go on until the parents are dead or otherwise not able to continue the legal fight.

  2. cyprus is a bullshit country run by criminals, surrounded by clowns

  3. All I can say, I wish the people that helped cover this up, have not gotten a single night of good sleep since and from this day forward. I hope their guilt is eating them alive.

  4. I want to believe it was gross incompetence by the coroner rather than intentional cover up. But regardless, I hope that justice is served and the murderers are brought to justice.

  5. I think if you dig deep enough you’ll find that Stavrianos lied about other’s deaths as well. It’s not the 1st time that he was caught lying.

In this situation, at the time the body of Thanasis was discovered, another doctor was in the area by coincidence and went to see what happened. This doctor said that the body was already cold, ie the death wasn’t recent. Stavrianos arrived as well, without a thermometer (coroner’s must have one to examine a body at the scene) and declared that the body was warm and after 10 minutes said it was by suicide.

Who was he covering for? Who called him beforehand to lie about Thanasis death?
He needed protection when his name was revieled. Why?

Whoever is behind this murder, must be from a rich and powerful family. I wonder if the names ever come out in the public.

  6. I am suprised that the family won and not also murdered..

  7. I am still wondering why we are not protesting with the parents for this…

We are all idiots and victims of.our own stupidity in so many matters.

  8. I’m not citizen, but my fist reaction would be to contact the party you’ve voted for and ask for actions. Especially, if he is from ‘your’ party. You have leverage to push this matter, you have vote, and they need it.
