A former Sinn Féin press officer has been returned for trial accused of a number of child sex offences.
Michael McMonagle now faces 15 charges, a court heard on Thursday.

He appeared at Londonderry Magistrates Court accused of committing the offences between May 2020 and August 2021.

At a preliminary enquiry hearing, McMonagle (42), from Limewood Street in the Bogside area of the city, spoke only to confirm his name, date of birth and address.

He informed the court that he had nothing to say at this stage in relation to the charges.

Since his last court appearance in November, when he was originally charged with three child sex abuse offences, the Public Prosecution Service (PPS) has added a further 12 similar charges to the bill of indictment
The defendant is now charged with 13 charges of attempting to sexually communicate with a female child under the age of 16, for the purpose of his own sexual gratification, by encouraging the child to sexually communicate with him.

He is further charged with attempting to incite a female child under the age of 16 to engage in a sex act.

There are six complainants on the indictment

solicitor for the PPS submitted to District Judge Barney McElholm that the defendant had a case to answer.

The District Judge granted the defence barrister’s application.

McMonagle was returned to the Crown court for his arraignment on the 15 charges on April 11.

As part of his bail conditions, the defendant must reside at his Limewood Street address. He is banned from having any contact with children under the age of 16 unless the contact is approved by social services.

McMonagle was previously a Sinn Fein press officer and adviser.

  5. I was in the court room this morning waiting on getting a driving related fine at the time and had no idea who he was as he sat beside me on the bench. Was nearly sick when he stood and they were reading out his charge sheet, literally wouldn’t have known how despicable of a man he was. Crazy!

  6. Now now, innocent until proven guilty. There may be a very very very slim chance that all six claimants are lying or mistaken over his intentions. Shit! I can’t even convince myself, linch him!!!!

  7. Why do these people tend to have a certain look, I’m sure in time he’ll get some tinted glasses.

  8. Where is a good six pack when you need it?

What a worthless excuse for a human.

  9. You know the sex offender rate per capita is 0.058 in the UK. Sinn Fein have about 323 mp’s across several parliament’s/Dails and according to 2021 about 2000 staff.

Sinn Fein are statistically 5times more likely to be a sex offender or a pedophile than the populus they serve.

    Why?

  10. After going through your post history, it’s funny to me that every single post in here is negative towards anything to do with republicanism.
I think we can all agree that anyone that has anything to do with child sex crimes should be hung, drawn and quartered, but something is telling me that if this was a DUP rep, you wouldn’t be posting.

  11. Saw him in a picture before court in Omagh. Not one Derry Sinn Féin member with him, was the local mid Ulster/Omagh ones. I figured that if none of the local ones is going to weigh in behind him they might have a bit of insight into the whole debacle the others might not have been told about.

  12. A few Cinder blocks to the knee caps would do him the world of good
