“Those who refuse to abide by such orders can have their medical licenses suspended for up to one year, and also face up to three years in prison or a 30 million won (roughly $22,500) fine. Those who receive prison sentences would be stripped of their medical licenses.”
So their response to striking doctors is…..to have even less doctors able to work? Cutting off our nose to spite your face are we Seoul?
That is a ‘Brexit-level’ own goal.
UK/Canada should be overnight expediting work permits for them
My brain read “prostitution” there for a second.
Moment of thinking these lot dont fuck around
Indentured servitude or else? Fucking scary a democratic country would be in the position to force doctors to work.
I predicted this last week.
The concept of “face” is extremely important, and the South Korean government will not do anything that smacks of losing it.
So they make demands and, when the demands aren’t met, they escalate… no matter how much harm it will cause to themselves.
Their government would probably be willing to decertify every single doctor in the country AND lock them up becfore admitting they screwed up.
Hmm, seems more complex an issue, at least more than the straightforward union spats the US has and still screws up.
I wish them luck.
Stand with the doctors.
This feels like high school all over again. My punishment for not going to class was in-school suspension ie still not going to class. “Work or we’ll arrest you” just means they’re still not working. It isn’t a mine where you can throw them down it and say ore or no food.
As a Korean, SK is such a shit show. Kpop and k dramas mask how terrible of a country it is to the rest of the world
The article is only focusing on the government’s intention of raising the number of doctors while drawing attention away from why the government made the rash choice of raising it, namely an aging population as a result of the working conditions that they (the government) have created. Par the course with other countries that face this issue, they would rather create laws to mitigate the effects of an aging population than actually tackle the reason as to why this happens.
Some might argue that having a larger pool of doctors is good, and although I am in agreement with that, the article and other sources like Times state “an expanded quota would not address the shortages as they are confined to specialties, like emergency care, where pay is low and working conditions are poor”. Even if the government forces institutions to produce more doctors, it would not alleviate the issue as doctors would choose to enter higher paying fields like plastic surgery. Until the government addresses the issues with their working conditions, doctors will not willingly enter fields with such conditions.
Furthermore the South Korean government is showing their fascisitic tendencies by threatening the doctors instead of actually addressing the problems. The Korea Medical Association which is a union for doctors also support the trainees in their protest. South Korea would rather crumble than address their work condition issues and their chaebols (billionaires that run the country)
What if they don’t strike but quit and try to find a new job altogether? Because that’s what I would do. Fuck that
Typical Reddit comments jumping to conclusion without knowing the finer details. These doctors are protesting to PREVENT more medical students entering the field.
It is a far more complex issue than just big bad government oppressing righteous doctors.
Most citizens are actually in support of the government to end the protest.
Same government also wants to penalize adults for not having kids by forcing them to work more hours each week.
Such a pathetic toxic culture. No wonder more and more SK Women are refusing to do anything with SK men.
Go back to work, we need you bad! Also we are gonna put you in jail despite having horrible doc shortage
Canada will take them all
BC is currently poaching NHS doctors by giving 2x salary
What if the doctor students say they want a new career? Can and will the government prosecute that personal decision?
Sure, it’s slightly authoritatian to do this, but the doctors cause of striking is incredibly selfish. Do some study on the subject. Their only agenda is indirectly their own salaries and the reputation of their profession.
So they are worried about having more competition… That’s pathetic really.
So basically, in the next ten years I can (as an American) expect to see more SK doctors.
Professionals go where they are treated well enough. I’m not saying that medical professionals are treated well in the US, but I’m betting it’s better than SK.
The 12 yr olds on r/europe tell me this strike was a Putin psy-op
Recently they passed some shitty net neutrality law that basically forces foreign companies to pay massively for bandwith. Twitch left because of it and the SK goverment is asking for a fine because they say Twitch left and thats not legal.
The country seems like a massive shitshow
A lot of people are having a knee-jerk reaction to the headline “SK government threatens doctors with prosecution” without understanding the context or realizing that the majority of Koreans are siding with the government. Let me explain why many South Koreans are unsympathetic.
* South Korea has the second lowest number of doctors per capita among the OECD nations. There’s no way to fix this other than increasing the size of medical school classes (or importing foreign doctors, which KMA will also oppose). Coupled with a rapidly aging population, there’s a looming crisis.
* [South Korean doctors are paid very well.](https://www.koreaherald.com/view.php?ud=20230730000088) I cannot think of a country outside of the US where doctors make more after factoring in spending power of their salary. Trust me, they would rather pay the $30k fine than move to UK or Canada. (I know because my sister is a Korean MD.)
* South Korean doctors have opposed reforms to the nursing profession because it would cut into their profits and reduce their ability to schedule shifts at the doctors’ whim. This is why SK nurses are also not lifting a finger to support doctors.
* South Korean doctors have also fought other attempts to regulate their profession.
Are SK doctors overworked? Yes. But if this is their primary concern, they should not be opposed to increasing the number of doctors so the burden can be distributed, right? So people are calling it what it is, which is protecting their economic privileges.
As for the claim that increasing the number of doctors doesn’t address the shortage in unpopular specialties – this will balance out over the long term if there are more doctors with the help of market forces, whereas it will never be addressed as long as there’s a shortage of doctors overall. I remember when the South Korean bar used the same argument to oppose raising the cap on the number of lawyers admitted years ago. Guess what – people now have better access to legal services because there are more lawyers. Whowuddathunk!
I would just tell government i got sick and cant work! 😀
People predictably comment about irrelevant “Korea facts” like the decades old pilot incident, or stats about plastic surgery etc and get massive upvotes. Reddit is so brain-dead and annoying.
~~Fuck, they’re going the Reagan route.~~
>Thousands of medical interns and residents have been on strike for about 10 days to protest the government’s push to boost medical school enrollments.
Wait, what?
Good. Actively trying to stop others getting the education they want should and you in very hot water.
