For everyone talking about Germany joining, they don’t need Germany. You need just a handful of NATO countries to put a noticable amount of troops in specific areas in a support capacity.
Why?
If these are support troops not engaged in any hostilities one Russian missile strike resulting in casualties for them triggers a smash of that article 5 button. One bad pre strike Intel report and Russia is facing down NATO in its entirety. Even still best case scenario areas where these troops are known to be will be safe from Russian attack as well this freeing up things like air defence.
It’s a high risk / high reward proposition, one that many in Europe feel they need to make due to the issues with the US in guaranteeing aid. (I’m so sorry we are working on it and hopefully we see a discharge petition once Congress is back in session to force the vote)

Eichelsheim is the Commander in Chief of the Dutch military.
