French troops may be sent to Ukraine to protect certain borders, to participate in exercises or ground air defense, French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal said during a speech in the Senate, Public Senat reported on Feb. 28.
He dismissed the possibility of French soldiers directly engaging in frontline battles.
Regarding President Emmanuel Macron’s remarks, Attal noted that the president couldn’t rule out such scenarios due to Russia’s evolving stance toward France and its allies.
“The reality is that Russia poses a direct and immediate threat to France on all fronts,” he added.
In the event of Ukraine’s defeat, Attal warned that the conflict front would inevitably shift westward.
Following the Ukraine summit in Paris on Feb. 26, Macron acknowledged that the deployment of Western troops to Ukraine might become necessary in the future, though no agreement has been reached on this matter. Macron also advocated for increased arms supplies to Kyiv.
French Foreign Minister Stéphane Séjourné suggested that NATO forces could assist with demining, cyber operations, or weapons production in Ukraine.
Possible deployment of NATO troops in Ukraine: What is known
Before the summit of European leaders in Paris on Feb. 26, Slovak Prime Minister Robert Fico stated that several NATO and EU member states were discussing the possibility of sending their military to Ukraine based on bilateral agreements. Slovakia will not take such a step but will respect the decisions of countries that agreed to send troops to Ukraine.
French President Emmanuel Macron later stated that sending Western troops to Ukraine in the future could not be ruled out. However, there is currently no agreement on this issue.
French Prime Minister Gabriel Attal echoed Macron’s statement regarding the possibility of sending Western troops to Ukraine, emphasizing that Paris would not accept a situation where Russia wins the war.
Polish President Andrzej Duda mentioned that representatives of 28 countries actively discussed the idea of sending troops to Ukraine during a meeting in Paris, but it did not generate much enthusiasm. This issue was the subject of heated debate
Poland’s Deputy Defense Minister Cezary Tomczyk stated that his country ”has no project or idea” to send its military to Ukraine.
The issue of sending troops to Ukraine is not relevant for Sweden, according to Prime Minister Ulf Kristersson.
NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg clarified that the Alliance has no plans to send its military to Ukraine, highlighting that allies have been providing unprecedented assistance to Ukraine since 2014.
Please send troops. It should be France though and/or the UK as other countries would risk getting nuked. So while France goed in the rest of EU should start taking this shit more seriously. It is embarrassing that Russia is currently producing 7 artillery shells for every artillery shells of th combined West.
something like this should have been done a long time ago, even before 24.02.22
Well they already are operating those AA stations. Now it will just be official.
The border part sounds interesting. This has also been discussed since the beginning of the war really.
When the Russians attack such borders they will clash with French troops which is a very weird grey zone when those countries are supposedly not at war. Nobody knows what is allowed at that point and what isn’t.
The lines would be so blurred that Russia could essentially strike targets in France without having to declare war?
Also it’s very likely Russia would escalate by saying France has declared war and that would allow them to generate support to transform their economy to full war time economy and allow higher drafting which is bad for Ukraine.
I’m kinda baffled by this stance, honestly. Ukraine and Russia are at war: you either commit to support one of them (via money, intel, weapons and equipment, volunteers, covert SF operations or a combination of all the previous) or you commit to joining the war on one of the two sides. The only third option is doing nothing.
I don’t understand what kind of endgame a country is pursuing when declaring that *maybe* their regular armed forces could join one side of the war but *only during specific tasks/operations*.
It doesn’t make any sense, both from a political and from a military point of view. Again, I’m kinda baffled.
Europe strengthens Ukraine doing things Ukrainians need done, so they release their population and mobilizes more troops. Is that it?
I am impressed.
Insane that this is even considered!
If nato troops officially enter in Ukraine, it becomes global war. Anyone who wants this to happen is crazy.
As soon as this happens there will be war all over the world. Arab countries will attack Izrael, China will attack Taiwan, and the situation in Balkans is also already brewing…
Most of us had never live trough the war, and if you are smart, you shouldn’t want to play a part in it.
Why woul you give your life for bunch of old farts which are leading people into death and destruction?
Macron is the only one with clear ideas on this war and the one to understand that action is needed and time to watch the movie is over.. italy 🇮🇹
I don’t see why NATO soldiers can’t protect Ukrainian borders? Like if Ukraine is ok with it thats all that matters.
How long until that boils over into a third world war? Decisions like this shouldn’t be made lightly.
Fantastic!
Yeah let them start war. I’m out. Peace ✌️
Not a good idea
Based if happens
Мы не просим солдат НАТО отправлятся в Украину и не просим за нас умирать. Мы лишь просим помощи оружием настолько насколько это возможно.
French government have gone off their rocker. Taking on real risk of nuclear war. No thanks.
This calls for the French Foreign Legion.
Fucking based
As a Brit i’ll be pissed if we let the French out do us.
Hell yeah! Ukraine can’t do this alone.
Allons enfants, de la Patrie, le jour de gloire est arrivé!
This might just be monsieur Macron’s redemption arc
Based as fuck France if true.
It is interesting to see the change in Germany and France since 2021. Germany went from giving non-lethal aid to supplying artillery, tanks, IFVs etc. I know about Taurus, but they did a lot.
France evolved from we should talk to Russia in order to secure a peace deal to we will send troops in some parts of Ukraine.
I wonder what happened in recent weeks as it seems that EU nations have become more and more assertive. Maybe this sense of urgency is fueled by the lack of new US aid? Do EU countries plan for long-term support irrespective of US involvement? If this is the case, then this is the start of EU strategic autonomy.
You could put troops into Ukraine now and set a line that can not be crossed. It will be harder to put troops in Ukraine when the country is collapsing.
I don’t get why Nato doesn’t just put their cards on the table and say they have decided to protect innocent civilians from attack from either side, with aircraft that will intercept and missiles fired at civilian areas, or drones.
I do my fair share of dumping on France, but if they do this at a noticeable scale and take it seriously, my respect will grow immensely and I’ll take their aspiration to spearhead European security more favourably.
And this is how regional wars escalate into full blown conflicts
It’s absolutely weird how everyone here forgets that the Russians can be helped instantly with big numbers of soldiers and ammo from their allies which as we see, are way more linked to them than the western powers to Ukr.
Just don’t think 1 sec that in the case of NATO vs Rus, the Russians will be alone…NEVER!
I know I’m the end America will have to stick to its commitment in Europe. My heart fears for my kids since they are of military age. Three years ago I visited the Normandy beaches in northern France and saw the sacrifice made by these young kids, during the Second World War by the allies at the American Cemetery, one of many in the battlefields of Europe. I only wish this doesn’t come to be.
Hopefully a sign of things to come
I’m French and this is something I thought we could do for quite some time. If they do it I’d be really impressed with our government.
France is probably pissed at how committed Russia is at confronting it in Africa. It has been lasting for years and is not some small operation. No other EU country is in such direct and large conflict with Russia.
lol. No it won’t. Proportionally speaking, it has provided the least amount of support of the European countries, delusions of former greatness.
If they do this I will become a massive francophile, holy shit. I will never joke about yall stealing our flag and turning it sideways again.
I will never say a bad thing about the French if they do this.
Brits are first actually!
Sunak said in January that their troops are there helping with the storm shadow missiles
Not really
France being a nuclear power has more leverage than most eu countries. Russia is less likely to respond directly.
“strategic border control”
So, they’re going to go there to control the border and make sure Ukrainians can’t run away and avoid being sent as cannon fodder on the front lines?
