  11. Looks like Sweden's suicidal so called 'neutrality' policy is finally over, albeit the lost 'opportunity cost' that resulted due to that myopic misguided 'folly' i.e. 'neutrality'. If the writer is correct Sweden could have joined the NATO without this fuss post World War 2, when almost all the countries in the European theatre opted for membership, save Sweden. They must have had their 'concerns' and it appears that Russia was not considered a serious threat in Swedish configuration. They had this 'myopic', short-sighted geo-political view that 'neutrality' would assure the country' s security concerns.

    It has turned out that it is not so, in fact neutrality has its built in risks as in an emergency a 'neutral' country cannot depend on any country esp. when a hegemonistic country like Russia in your neighbor. To add insult to injury once the Swedes realized their 'folly' they had to spend an exasperating time period to get the membership of NATO due to Hungary delaying the ratification of membership. Victor Orban played a daring game, challenging NATO while being a member of that organization, patently doing Russia or Putin's bidding and almost thwarted the absorption of Sweden into NATO.

    How can one forget that Hungary was a fmr., communist country had the audacity to challenge NATO at their own door step. Hungary and Victor Orban should have been kicked out NATO and should not have been allowed to join NATO at all due to inherent political risks involved. Perhaps, Switzerland could carry on its neutrality due to absence of the likes of a Russian bear at its doorstep, and being fortunate enough to have civilized countries surrounding its small land area, not so Sweden, which country should have been the 'first' to apply for NATO membership post World War 2 and finally has become a member after being forced to allow so many concessions to Hungary for the ratification of Swedish membership into NATO !

  13. Hungary was bought off with jets, but at least now Finland and soon Sweden are NATO members after some paperwork. A stronger alliance to keep Russia at bay!

  15. Europe needs its own military, NATO could serve that purpose, without the U.S. That way, there is no U.S. influence in Europe’s affairs. Europe would make its own decisions with its own money and soldiers.

  17. Vladimir Putin had originally claimed that his war was intended to prevent Ukraine from joining NATO. Instead he got Finland and Sweden. Putin however may be just months away from getting more than he could ever have dreamed of, if he manages to convince, which won't be difficult, Donald Trump to withdraw the United States from NATO.
