I’m happy to share with you that starting in August this year the Albert Einstein College of Medicine will be tuition [Applause] free [Applause] w

The Albert Einstein College of Medicine in the Bronx plans to be tuition-free for students, after a $1bn donation from former professor Dr Ruth Gottesman.

The donation is among the largest to date for an educational institution in the US. Half of Einstein’s most recent class of students are New Yorkers, according to the medical school – 59% are women and the majority are people of color. And Einstein’s students graduate with higher amounts of debt than other medical students at New York City schools. Gottesman said she hopes that it makes medical school more accessible to those who could not previously afford it.

  1. EVERY TEACHER TRAINING PROGRAM IN AMERICA SHOULD ALSO BE TUITION-FREE, AND EVERY CREDENTIALED TEACHER SHOULD BE PAID A MINIMUM OF 100K AS A STARTING SALARY. IF WE DON'T SHOW OUR APPRECIATION TO TEACHERS, OUR NATION WILL NOT HAVE A FUTURE.

  2. I can imagine their happiness but It also looks a bit funny because education is already free in most European countries

  3. I don't get why every college over there doesn't do this, we have it over here in most of Europe already

  4. Wish many more billionaires come forward to fund many more colleges. Also the same generosity is to be expected from the doctors who get educated there, should pass it on

  5. I hope its not backfired. I mean once my boss gave english tuition free for our employee but they did with lazinees because its free. They dont care enough coz nothing to lose

  6. I hope all those students will not take that for granted and actually make a better future, not just for themselves, but the people they will be able to help.

  7. I don't even go here. I don't even study medicine. But, I'm teary eyed watching this.

Looking at the balance I have left of my student debt

  8. People that did not get to enjoy this should at least be happy that some people will. Yes, there are plenty of rich students there, but its not like the college wont get the money. Its a donation. She just allowed these students to focus on developing themselves instead and theres no way youre going to tell me thats a bad thing. Each one of these students are now inspired to do the same for the future. Education should be free.

  9. it's quite fitting a gift for people who give years of their lives to learn how to save lives for the rest of their lives, isn't it?
