Let’s just forget that the Ukrainians are again fighting for their lives because of the Russians and ordinary Ukrainians are lucky if they don’t suffer yet another lengthy power outage caused by a Russian attack on a power station or just get wiped out by a nighttime missile attack on their homes while asleep.
If the Russians (especially the “good” ones) didn’t bother to get the facts or do honest research with VPN already, a nationwide ban on it won’t move the needle by even a nanometer.
Are we also to believe that millions of Russians (especially the privileged and “liberal” folk hailing from Moscow and St. Petersburg) have been totally clueless about life outside their precious motherland up to very recently despite working for non-Russian companies, studying abroad or regularly spending their summer vacations in the EU, MENA or SE Asia?
Ignorance and “propaganda” are no excuses.

Honestly Russian government cracks down on VPN’s and proxies, but for the outsiders. At the beginning of the war I could visit minfin.ru or fssp.gov.ru with any random web proxy. Now I’d either have to use paid VPN or make my own on a VPS. Wonder how long until these will be blocked.

Burn local police stations and military bases or leave Russia.
Russia doesn’t have the capabilities to ban all VPNs. Even China hasn’t been able to do it and they are a lot more competent technologically than Russia. Unless they want to turn into a complete intranet like North Korea, its not happening.
Don’t worry, there will still be Russians screaming at you in steam lobbies for some time to come.
I don’t use VPN, it’s basically needed for instagram and twitter(X). Everything else works for us, and without advertising

Doesn’t the west own almost the whole internet infrastructure, as in the sea cables and such? I had the impression that the west (mostly USA) had the capacity to just turn off the outside world network to Russia. If so then you might not even need an VPN in the first place.

When Lukashenko shut down Belarusian Internet in August 9, 2020, our software development company sorted this out in the first 3 working hours.

It’d be fantastic if cutting access to porn and CS:GO lobbies by banning vpns was what finally breaks the camel’s back and gets the Russians to overthrow this asshole

VPNs have been banned in other authoritarian countries like China or the UAE… and nothing has happened. Probably the same will be the case in Russia.
It’s hard to ban a VPN but they could issue their own root certificate(s) and require everyone to use it for their traffic. Decrypt traffic on ISP side. All traffic not encrypted with keys from their certificate gets blocked. And voila – you have completely working Internet that is transparent to Russia FSB.
Certificate pinning can get in the way but that’s users problem.
