How ‘no-go zone’ myth spread from fringes to mainstream UK politics

  1. > The claim by a former government minister earlier this week that parts of London and Birmingham with large Muslim populations are “no-go areas” has highlighted the enduring myth that there are UK neighbourhoods and towns unsafe for white people.
    > Paul Scully, the MP for Sutton and Cheam in Greater London, later retracted his suggestion that Tower Hamlets and Sparkhill were unsafe for non-Muslims to enter, made during a BBC interview about allegations of anti-Muslim sentiments within the Conservative party. But he also defended invoking the Islamophobic trope on the grounds that people told him they perceived there to be a threat.

My spidey senses are telling me Paul here is talking out of his ass. Just to spread division within his constituents. I’m surprised he didn’t mention Bradford!

  2. The weird part is that it’s not just a UK far right talking point/lie.

Britain’s supposed “no go zones” come up a bizarre amount in US far right political rhetoric.

  3. Like many rightwing myths or conspiracies, the idea gained traction because there is a level of truth.

No go zones come from several places.

    1. Police no go zones.

We all know it’s true that there are places in the country that the police won’t go unless in large numbers, this has been a problem for a long time.

Not a conspiracy or a myth.

    2. Immigrants creating enclaves. I.e living in a very concentrated way that effectively creates a segregated community even if the occasional resident isn’t part of the enclave.

    Not a conspiracy or myth.

    3. Incidents of Muslims putting up signs and patrolling areas, this has been documented & the only counter claim is that it doesn’t happen anymore.

Not a conspiracy or a myth.

It’s very easy to make up a strawman of what’s happening to dismiss it but you can’t tell people that their eyes are lying to them.

  4. It’s red meat to their base, isn’t it?

Middle England voters who would never dream of going to an inner city area vote a specific way because they wrongly think that they might not be able to go to…an inner city area.

You would have to have a heart of stone, not to laugh!

  5. The Tories are a far right political party. And as sunak said last night, they are the enemy trying to destroy society.

  6. a teacher in baltey is in hiding for showing a cartoon. mob rule does happen in muslim enclaves. and isnt it funny how all these gaza obsessives have nothing to say about that batley teacher?

  7. On one extreme of this discussion, you have the idea that that there are areas which infidels literally cannot go to. However, I don’t see many people actually saying this at all – but many that there are muslim areas where your comfort and safety may be compromised if you deviate from certain social expectations.

On the other extreme, which I do hear commonly, you have people saying this ‘no-go’ idea is twaddle because plainly you can go where you like. But that argument is willfully ignorant of the fact that ‘no-go’ isn’t a literal territorial restriction, but an indication that ghettoised muslim communities carry their own brand of hostility to outsiders. Sometimes that hostility is hidden, sometimes is passive, and sometimes it’s aggressive – and denying it exists at all is looking increasingly naive. It’s baked into the holy text, after all.

  8. It does this because we let bigoted pricks express their bigotry under the guise of “Freedom of Speech” and we don’t challenge them. That’s how it goes from a dog whistle to an actual whistle.

  9. There definitely are no-go zones in the UK, especially if you’re alone and it’s after dark, but it’s not because they’re highly populated with Muslims, it’s because they’re crime hotspots with cunts of all races looking to rip you off.

  10. There are many no-go zones across this country which are especially dangerous for Jewish people to go in. It is not a myth and the loud minority are no longer mainstream.

  11. No-go zones exist. There are several estates and boroughs by me I wouldn’t dream of venturing into at night and would do my best to avoid during the day. But these areas don’t receive national media attention because they’re full of white people and can’t be used to drum up racism.

  12. There are no no-go zones in London, but there are areas where being a victim of crime (mugging or theft with violence) is more likely.

  13. Rough areas have always existed. But for some bizarre reason we are only caring about areas rough with high immigrant populations. High muslim areas are making national news. It’s actually bizarre. Youths are actually getting out of control and being aggressive with random people, including white youths. But instead of building youth services we are just screaming “kick the brown people out” like that will help. It won’t.

  14. There are plenty of no-go areas, but that is because they are shitholes rather than anything to do with religion. Like Swindon.

  15. Police no go areas seem to be everywhere if you’re not a big business or Tory. Try getting them to take home or car burglary seriously for example.
