*Our democracy is under threat from groups who don’t believe our way of doing things, according to the current prime minister, and third of this parliament, in a government unrecognisable from the one elected in 2019.*
*“I realise that literally none of you voted for me to be prime minister, but that’s different.*
*“Yes, I understand the people who voted Tory in 2019 did so to put Boris in number 10, but democracy is a funny thing. One minute you’re voting for a very specific thing, something about which you are VERY clear in your head.*
*“The next, something very different is happening and you’re being told this is what you voted for.*
*“Yes, just like Brexit, and just like me being prime minister. This is the price you pay for living in a democratic society. Sometimes you vote for something, win the vote, and then something entirely different happens… just because.*
*“This bait and switch tactic is core to the British political system, so we must not let protestors do any of that inconvenient protesting stuff to draw attention to our duplicitous nature.*
*“If you think this is another small step towards us introducing laws that would allow us to lock up protesters for saying things we don’t like, then you would be very astute.”*
Supply teacher PM.
He clearly does not rb the Poll Tax riots.
With any luck this sentence still holds true in 12 months time
No one votes for PMs in the UK, that’s not how parliamentary system works
Didn’t realise our democracy had changed into a direct one?
Unelected sloppy second that lost in party selection to Liz Truss, that’s who is talking here.
In the parliamentary system, the people elect the members of the parliament, and the members of the parliament elect the prime minister. Just because it is not elect very directly does not make it “unelect”. If the people want to change it, they can change the members of parliament.
What a pointless empty speech, but that’s just about what you would expect.
More onion eaters in the comments.
FFS, did IQs drop suddenly around here?
This thread is gonna be filled with “well actually…” Types talking about how “the parliamentary system, blah, blah, blah” but the reality is that after the calamitous shit show that was Liz Truss, the Tory party lost any and all credibility with regards to remaining in power. If this moribund, zombie-like monstrosity of a government gave two shits about “democracy” it would have fallen on its sword and called an election the second they replaced the last useless mouth-breather with the current one.
The fact the “parliamentary system” allows this pathetically useless and fundamentally dead corpse of a government to linger like a bad smell, essentially reducing the country to one with no effective government, does more to undermine it than all the far right and Islamist loons combined.
But still keep telling us about “… Well we don’t elect…” While this system and the country as a whole continues to circle the drain.
Democracy has been trashed enough by having these clowns in power for so long.
Maybe he have called an election, if he believes so much in democracy…
So did everybody in the comments miss the satire flair on the post? Didn’t check the source? Yep, sounds like this sub alright.
Out of Boris, May, Truss and now Sunak, how is it even possible that one country can ever be so burdened with the shame of this terrible quad of useless creatures? Heck even Thatch gives them a run for the money.
The issue we now face for the next general election is akin to choosing between Kwikfit and Halfords to repair your car. Which will do the least damage rather than deliver the best service
Democratic principles. What he really means is Tory principles that have wiped out working class people financially. We need to protest more because thats what gets them worried and shows them that we’ve had enough.
His constituents voted for him, like every Prime Minister before him
While he’s a twat for sure, the principle of the headline is that we vote for a prime minister, we don’t. We may think like we do sometimes but we don’t.
“Can’t be having division / words of hatred from others…only from me and my party you plebs”
Just to be clear, does everyone understand that this is a “news” article from a satirical website?
The only minority in the UK causing serious, irreversible damage and threatening our democratic and modern principles make up about 0.000033% of the population. Who are they? Cabinet members of this current government.
Rampant transphobia, cronyism, misogyny, racism, classism et al are pushing us backwards, not forwards, and they’re the ones letting it happen on their watch and are wholly responsible.
If they could be locked up and never heard of again I’m sure the general populace would be all for it.
Oh not this again, only his constituents voted for him, although other people did vote for their Tory MP assuming it was a vote for Boris. You can punish them next time if you want, if you did even vote Tory
Jihadism is a very real problem in the UK that threatens democracy.
We don’t vote for Prime Ministers in this country? Strange headline.
I mean as much as I want to be like “yeah ahaha we don’t vote for our prime minister”, so funny!!!! We still live in a representative democracy, and nothing he has down is against our democracy’s values in terms of him being there…. and he is saying this because the representatives we elect are under threat… So yeah, he has a point
