Nineteen councils allowed to sell assets to pay for services

  1. The UK really is in a post-WW2 situation now. Labour in my opinion are not going to address this but I’ll certainly give them a chance to prove me wrong.

  2. Nice, run it into the ground as much as possible and then leave labour to clear up the mess.

  3. That was *never* the plan of course…. Follow the money. Watch the Tory donors buy up millions of pounds worth of land and buildings for buttons

  4. All by design. Once in the hands of the private sector they’ll be de facto impossible to recover. Any attempts at doing so will be met with tears from the right screaming about “expropriation”.

Stealing public assets and selling them at a cut price to private individuals is ok. Taking it back is not.

  5. Wait to see the Mayoral chain in the pawn shop Or xxxxxx council sponsored by Coke.

  6. Please don’t be on there, please don’t be on there, please don’t be aaahh son of a bitch I’m at the top.

Anyone know any small town in Yorkshire I can move to?

  7. I’d be interested to see how many of these assets end up in the hands of Tory donors.

  8. What assets are left? I thought most councils sold assets off during 2010-15 austerity period!

  9. Housing Developers donate a lot to the Tories. They’re going to love being able to snap up land that was held as an amenity for the public.

  10. And what will they be selling when they’re in the same situation next year?

  11. This is really to just allow them to limp on for another year – then they will be Labours problem.

  12. Allowed?

This was always the plan wasn’t it?

Fire sale of all the public assets

  13. Categorically not a good thing, and robbing Peter to pay Paul.

This *might* make a difference for a year or two, but that third year, when costs are even higher, and income is even lower, will be worse than just taking the pain right now.

  14. Just wish people would realise what this means for 10 years down the line.

2010 everyone was crying out for budget cuts… Here we are 14 years later and those cuts have made us poorer and left our public services so broken that we cannot afford to fix them.

It’s not even “ohh but hindsight” situation, it’s just fucking common sense.

  15. And what about the year after that? Shortsighted shite idea

  16. SOP of the powers that be…. moving public assets into the hands of private equity

  17. And what happens in 5 years when the councils need more but they’ve already sold their assets?

  18. Ahh yes sell it. Privatise it. Then charge extortionate rates for services…

  19. Oh fuck off. This is how most of them got into the mess in the first place. Council homes? Sold off and now? shortages.

  20. We are circling the plug hole.

How did it come to this

  21. Let’s sell our assets so they can be managed by asset managers and then wonder why we can’t get any value for money. These assets will never come back either. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

  22. Hooray! Next year they’ll need to pay for the same services, but won’t have the assets to sell anymore!

  23. For the record it’s 10 Labour councils, 5 Conservative councils, 3 Lib Dem councils and 1 with no majority control.

  24. With most councils facing bankruptcy in the next five to ten years, expect as much family silver to be sold as possible so that we get worse services with increased tax bills to boot.

  25. That won’t have any long terms negative impacts I’m sure

  26. Sooo, as a country we’re about at the stage of financial responsibility as someone who sells stuff to CEX to pay bills?

    Neat.

  27. Selling your furniture to pay the rent. What an absolute mess this government is. How could anyone ever have voted for them? Honestly you should all be ashamed.
