Labour: ‘No option of life on benefits for young’ – Kendall

  1. Putting Liz Kendall in charge of the DWP is like making the Child Catcher the Minister for Children. She has a history of hatred towards benefits claimants. I don’t know if there’s anyone Labour could put in place that’s more vile than Iain Duncan Smith, but Kendall is in the running.

  2. “No option of life on benefits for young”

Unless you become an MP. Then you’ll get all your personal expenses paid, including travel costs, utility bills and subsidized three course lunches in Parliament. And that’s not including all the backhanders and gratuities – book deals, promotional appearances, etc.

  3. whilst this is probably not a controversial idea, does she think the tories are known for being overly generous with the benefits system? if this is such a problem rather than a daily mail talking point, then surely there some other larger systemic problem causing it?

the unemployment rate is 3.8% which is not that high and the BoE has interest rates set to make people unemployed to reduce inflation, so it kind of seems like this is a problem that doesn’t exist.

I’m just an idiot on the internet, so perhaps i’m missing something?

  4. >Liz Kendall is expected to say the party will invest in careers and skills training.

OH will they? That sounds like a Pledge to me. Has Saint God King Starmer signed off on this? How does this pledge relate to the amorphous Fiscal Rules which may not apply today and do tomorrow depending on whether he sees his shadow that morning?

I bet he’ll drop it and leave her looking daft like he does so many Labour figures.

  5. To all the mouth frothers banging on about leeching benefit scum, could someone point out to me how I can be one. If it’s so fucking easy and a life of Riley, show me how.

Because last time I had to sign on, I couldn’t even cover my rent in a cheap one room HMO. It was a depressing and horrible time.

But apparently that’s not the case. Point me to free cars, holis and flat screen TVs please

  6. They ain’t benefits. They’re National Insurance payments if I should be unable to work I should be able to support myself to live a reasonable standard of living if benefits don’t allow that when it’s needed il have back the 15 years of NI contributions I put in.

  7. I literally don’t know a single person my age who doesn’t work. The one exception is a guy who got rich on bitcoin.

Wtf is this? This cat is so dead it belonged to Ramesses.

  8. This early 2000’s revival is wearing fucking thin pretty fast. The majority of young people I know are all keen to graft but like us who’ve recently fell out of the ‘young people’ category, they want to be fairly rewarded for it.

Wish they’d stop beating dead horses and stop trying to be some throwback to pre-2008 bullshit.

  9. What Kendall is promising is nothing different to what the Tories already offer. And what the Tories already offer isn’t working, hence the 850,000 16-24 year old NEETs she’s talking about. What a nothing statement 💀

  10. I’ve worked with deprived young people. There are a few themes* to what causes deprivation and one is generational dependence on benefits. Helping people break the “life on benefits” cycle is a good thing in my mind.

Parents help to create aspirations and life expectations. Sadly some of them pass down that life is about getting by on the state. For example, we had women whose mums told them to have a baby young so they can get housing etc.

People with disabilities and long-term illnesses must be protected and I understand Labour won’t target those groups. Those who resist full time employment for no good reason are fair game.

*Other themes include mental health issues, single parent households, and parents with criminal backgrounds.

  11. What I find fascinating is how they always target the most vulnerable people in society. the amount of cruelty I’ve seen towards people who are already struggling is disgusting. it’s been 14 years of cutting public services disregarding workers rights so employers can abuse their workers literally taking from the poor and handing it over to their mates.

  12. Not to infer they don’t deserve the help if they require it but its high time politicians and the media grew a pair of bollocks and acknowledged the lion share of the welfare budget goes on over 65’s. The state pension alone accounts for half of it (and rising)

But no.. keep going after young people like we’ve not shit on them enough already

    >Demons think tank in central London

That has to be a very unfortunate typo.. are they referring to Demos or is this really a thing?
