  1. You live on a small farm in a small village, the only thing you know about war are the stories from school and your dad – and all of he sudden you are killing or getting killed by a flame thrower. Wild stuff.

  2. There was actually a study circulated around the time that basically laid out all the reasons why flamethrowers weren’t that bad a way to die. Once in awhile I stumble upon it on Reddit. I think the WWII Pics sub posted it.

  3. Well, with the flame throwers, it would really depend on how much actually hit you. If you were fully engulfed, it would overload your pain receptors quite quickly, and you would either stumble around until you die or you would go into shock and just kinda loose motor functions. The worst would be if the flames never hit and you die of smoke inhalation inside one of the bunkers

  4. Interesting muzzle device on that M1 Carine about 35 seconds in. Anyone able to chime in?

  5. Look at the wand – that looks like an M1 flamethrower. The original one with fire extinguisher bottles as fuel tanks and a hydrogen torch as the ignition method. Apparently they weren’t very reliable, the M2 flamethrower was a massive improvement.

  6. Good thing the watermark is directly on top of the fuckin writing

  7. The imagine the things they did to conquer that place ….

  8. I noticed gold teeth glistening beneath the lips of several of the dead Japanese lying around us. Harvesting gold teeth was one facet of stripping enemy dead that I hadn’t practiced so far. But stopping beside a corpse with a particularly tempting number of shining crowns, I took out my kabar [knife] and bent over to make the extractions.

A hand grasped me by the shoulder, and I straightened up to see who it was. “What are you gonna do, Sledgehammer?” asked Doc Caswell [the Navy Corpsman attached to Sledge’s platoon]. His expression was a mix of sadness and reproach as he looked intently at me.

“Just thought I’d collect some gold teeth,” I replied.

    “Don’t do it.”

    “Why not, Doc?:”

“You don’t want to do that sort of thing. What would your folks think if they knew?”
