  1. Wikipedia considers microstate in term of land (like singapore, hongkong, brunei, Luxembourg) , in terms of population (greenland, iceland, faroe islands…) or both (Liechtenstein, andorra and so on)

  3. I live in Luxembourg and I can tell you it’s definitely not a microstate. Luxembourg is fairly big.

  6. Surely part of the difference is that Microstates are not fully sovereign, as in not having full control over foreign policy, defense etc, which (I think) applies to the above six (not sure about Malta) above

  11. The precise definition of a microstate is based on a few things, such as population and area, but the biggest factor is how shit is their national football team. Thus by qualifying for Euro 2016, Iceland lost it’s status as a microstate

  12. A microstate to me would be a country which basically only consists of one city.

    But even that wouldn’t really be a good measure.

  16. I have never heard Cyprus being described as a microstate . It’s about the same size as Jamaica.

  20. A micro state is a state that commonly is not on a standard map. That’s all I have to say. Luxembourg, Cyprus, Iceland and Montenegro are larger than most microstates, meaning they can be seen on the map.

  23. Malta isn’t a micro-state. In terms of population it’s similar to Iceland, Cyprus or Luxembourg. They are small countries but they’re countries like any other.

    You should include Jersey, Guernsey, and the Idle of Man, as well as the Faroe. They’re not 100% independent but close enough

  25. I’ve always been taught Luxembourg is a microstate.

    And that Malta is an island nation. Never heard if it as a microstate though that obviously makes sense.

  27. A microstate is a place where you can bring your money, if you are rich, if you don’t want to pay taxes in your country…

  31. I’d say the only true **micro**states there are Vatican City (0,44 km²) and Monaco (2 km²).

    San Marino, maybe, being 60 km².

    Liechstenstein, you might doubt about it, being 160 km².

    But Malta, 316 km²? And Andorra, 468 km²? I mean, Singapore is 734 km², just a little bit more than Andorra and I’ve never heard it being called a microstate.

    PS. There are 16 independent countries in the world with an area smaller than Andorra. I dare you to tell the name of half the ones not on this map.

  35. Having been to 4 out of 6 of these (Andora, Vatican, Malta and Liechtenstein) I wouldn’t personally consider Andora or Malta a microstate. Both of them have capitals , number of cities, public transport etc. Vatican and Liechtenstein though… It takes at most an hour to walk from one side of the country to the other.

  36. Well Iceland it’s a small nation, but I wouldn’t call it microstate.
