  1. It would definitely be a step in the right direction.

  2. I think the dying with no hope is a relatively uncontroversial group to offer Assisted Suicide or Euthanasia to.

  3. If you can’t do it yourself or if you have a degenerative illness, it’s not not possible to actively consent

  4. Doctors and consultants want to suppress this at all costs, judging by what I heard on the radio today

  5. The government wants to kill old people and free up hospital beds and such asap. I’m shocked.

Considering we’re seemingly copying Canada’s homework let’s just offer it as an option for “mentally ill” people too and be fucking done with this slippy slope bullshit.

  6. If this shower in govt put it to a referendum they would probably fuck up the definition of dying in the wording. Living a non durable life or something ….

  7. I saw a recording of an assisted death a while ago that was documented at the clinic and it didn’t look that peaceful, but I suppose in the long run for him it was. Still a very hard watch. I’ve heard of legal battles ongoing against the practitioners from families that their loved ones weren’t properly assessed as well before their deaths. Some things that could be faced down the line, but I do agree with it. I can’t speak for anyone in that position.

  8. Absolutely massive credit should be due to Gino Kenny TD.

I’m not a PBP supporter necessarily, but Gino has played an absolute blinder as a legislator – he’s one of the few TDs who seems to take that part of the job seriously, put the work in, and operate strategically.

He’s now seeing the success of that.

It was a bold move to introduce this Bill. It was an example of strategic insight to identify this issue as a wedge issue for the coalition which was not covered in the Programme for Government. It was a feat of effective parliamentary campaigning to carry that insight over the line to force the Government into a free vote on this issue.

Government dealt with it deftly in terms of putting it on the long finger and trying to control it in conmittee. Gino has maintained his attention in the issue diligently, and again that work has reaped rewards.

If this goes through, even though Gino won’t have accomplished all he wanted, he will have brought about a change far greater than I think any opposition TD could claim.

It’s a shame that his seat is in danger. Sinn Féin are probably closer to me politically in some ways, but I’d hate to see a third SF seat there at Gino’s expense. I hope he holds on and his work is appreciated. It’s hard work.

  9. Fully support dignity in dying but hopefully doesn’t go down the dystopian road Canada has gone down where poor are offered medically assisted death due to lack of social care.

  10. Good news, not something we like to think about but id like to have the option to decide if it came to it .

  11. I am uncomfortable with the notion of assisted suicide, as it can be abused for others gain. However for something like a late terminal illness, I think you should be allowed to go out on your own terms.

  12. How dare people want to die peacefully and painlessly instead of a slow painful agonising death

  13. I think we have to get real about our starting point here before we start debating it – this is already happening. It happens all the time. It happens as a matter of course.

Any debate will be about formalising it or not.

  14. Might add this in case some people are confused because I heard a few people giving out incorrect info at work today about this topic(pin it, vote it either way, doesn’t matter). Assited Euthanasia will not be provided on request because a person with poor mental heallth/suicidal thoughts wants it. It’s an out for people that suffer from illnesses and physical problems that leave them not having a normal life(Examples being patients of Stage 4 Cancer or being paralyzed from the neck down). Several Countries around the world allow this process under heavy restrictions.
