I feel bad for Americans on this sub

  1. Ah it takes a lot more than dislikes and being called a yank to make me leave a sub. People have crap days and feel the need to take it out on strangers on the internet. 🤷🏻‍♂️

  2. I find the hostility to Americans on this sub to be quite sad, and unrepresentative of most Irish people I know. Some of it is joking but the jokes are obvious to an Irish person but not to an American not familiar with a particular Irish reference, e.g. quotes about ‘yanks’ from The Field.

  3. I didn’t think it was that bad and I’m always lurking.

Edit: also growing up in NY as a kid I always thought Yank had something to do with being a Yankee fan, so that term really never bothered me. It’s also what southerners call northerners too, so if you’re from the north you’re getting it at all angles!

  4. Nah you’re grand. Haha, American here who lurks. Being called a Yank is not a big deal, could be a lot worse.

  5. LOL. I feel seen. (I don’t mind being called a yank at all. I’m from New England it’s fine with me. I subscribe to a magazine called Yankee!) But you guys are a bit mean sometimes. Like I’m a little bit scared make this comment.

  6. Your estimation of how many fucks I give about the opinions of faceless internet people could possibly use some calibration.

  7. My family emigrated to America when I was 10 and I’ve maintained an interest in my home country despite being thoroughly Americanized. I avoid commenting on contemporary issues that don’t affect me directly but would like to join in the odd bit of nostalgia or discuss US-Irish relations. I generally avoid it, though, out of concern someone would look at my comment history and accuse me of being a meddling Yank or plastic paddy.

  8. Haven’t experienced much hostility on here but since coming over I’ve experienced nothing but extremely friendly and helpful people that are doing their best to make the adjustment easier. It’s been really great to be honest you all should be proud of how friendly your culture is as a whole.

  9. The anti yank isn’t too much, the excessive whining for someone else to fix a non-problem is.

Ex. Anyone else getting miffed by all the streetlights that shine right through the left corner of your curtains that you got from your mum’s neighbor two Easters back?
Wish Finn Gael would take these things seriously 😳

  10. I don’t mind Americans posting here or taking pride in their heritage. The people that do annoy me are the ones who always complains about Americans taking an interest in their family history.

  11. Fucking yanks, how dare you bring your Apple, Oracle, Facebook, TripAdvisor, CitiBank, Accenture, Ergos, Activision, Intel, Fedelity and HubSpot over here and give us jobs?

  12. I mean, I’m Turkish and have literally zero connection to Ireland other than curiosity(my dad plays a big role) and I was accepted by most of the people here. Maybe you should check yourself.

  13. My wife and I are yanks who’ve been living in Ireland for five years at this point. We live in a tiny village and there’s one other yank couple living here. Every other person we meet wants to introduce us to each other, and I bet they’re as happy as we are that we’ve yet to meet.

  14. No one has been terrible to this American on here, but it’s not like I’ve advertised where I’m from.
Honestly I was treated worse in Ireland than I have been on this sub lol but it doesn’t matter.
I love Ireland and I’d go back in a heartbeat ❤

  15. I’ve internalized it. Was at a wine tasting this weekend, and somebody said “I’m Irish, I’m good with any booze”

Was not Irish. Bothered me a bit

  16. Hahaha, a lot of Americans are aware the rest of the world hates us (with good reason!) but nobody hates Americans more than Americans. We have to deal with us every day.

  17. Now there are two types of Americans:

    1. Americans that actually understand what we’re all talking about.

    2. Americans that dont know anything about Ireland and still call themselves Irish.
