Boris Johnson has denied claims that two aides warned him about a garden party in Downing Street during the first lockdown.
The prime minister has claimed he knew nothing about an email sent by his most senior official concerning the party on May 20, 2020. Martin Reynolds, the prime minister’s principal private secretary, invited 100 staff to attend the “socially distanced drinks”, asking people to “bring your own booze”.
The prime minister said last week that he attended the event for 25 minutes to thank staff but believed it to be a work event.
His account has been questioned as witnesses said there were tables filled with alcohol and that Johnson’s partner, Carrie Symonds, was drinking with colleagues from outside No 10.
Writing in The Sunday Times, Dominic Lawson, a former editor of The Spectator and The Sunday Telegraph, said: “Last week I spoke to a former Downing Street official who said at least two people had told the PM, after seeing the emailed invitation from his principal private secretary, Martin Reynolds, that this was ‘a party’ and should be immediately cancelled. I was told that Johnson’s dismissive response was to say they were ‘overreacting’ and to praise Reynolds as ‘my loyal labrador’.
“I then asked someone who has known the PM for decades what could have made him take such an approach (other than natural hospitality and affability). His immediate answer was: ‘It’s because deep down he obviously thought the regulations were ridiculous — so why should he observe them?’.”
A No 10 spokesman said: “It is untrue that the prime minister was warned about the event in advance. As he said earlier this week he believed implicitly that this was a work event.
I think Boris has just walked into a cul-de-sac by denying that. Operation Big Dog 🤮 might back those 2 aides into a corner to the point where they will verify Lawson’s version of events.
Oh look, the bendy boris bus is heading right for those two aides
So what? He asked everyone in the country publicly to use their ‘Great British Common Sense’, so … it was kinda implied he’d do so as well — and in case he didn’t, he basically confirms that he doesn’t have any common sense which should disqualify him for being in any position of power and/or responsibility. Case closed.
> His immediate answer was: ‘It’s because deep down he obviously thought the regulations were ridiculous — so why should he observe them?’.”
Sounds about right. Boris has flaunted every recommendation and every regulation he can unless he can’t avoid it. FFS, the idiot was boasting about shaking hands with covid patients at the start of the pandemic.
He would walk on his own parents’ corpses to remain PM. What a disgusting sick thing. King of the world my ass.
Well considering he’s lied to parliament multiple times now, I can’t take him at his word. I want proof that suggests he wasn’t aware.
