  1. > The delay is allowed under HMRC rules, which say minimum pay rates can be applied from the start of the “pay reference period” starting on or after 1 April – which for Tesco begins on 28 April.

    This needs to be changed.

If the legal minimum wage is to be enforced it has to be enforced for every hour that you work.

It should not be legal to pay people under minimum wage for a month simply because you do payroll at the end of the month.

If you work a night shift from 10pm on Sunday night 31st of march and finish at 6am Monday 1st of April, you should be paid the new minimum wage for those 6 hours.

This isn’t just about Tesco, it’s about every other employer across the country that does this.

How often does Tesco change the start of the “pay reference period”?

  3. Ok, that’s gotta be illegal but it sounds like, the crossover for the mandatory pay increase and their pay period is just unfortunate. Shitty as fuck to not go “Right, it falls over the new wage, we’ll increase it from the 31st.”

  4. They could back date the pay if they really wanted to. Bet they dont tho

  5. Weird how price rises are immediate with no delay of application to the next “price reference period”. Which exists: it is the period used to calculate inflation.

  6. In 2023, Tesco faced a challenging year due to unprecedented levels of inflation. Despite a strong sales performance, their adjusted retail operating profit declined by 6.1%, amounting to £2.49 billion. On a statutory basis, their pre-tax profit experienced a significant drop of 50.8%, reaching £1 billion

  7. My company does this EVERY year. They even take months to adjust the pay of managers in relation to the new minimum wage. (Their hourly rate works out about the same as the incoming NWM. Before all the unpaid overtime they do). Bear in mind we are all on minimum wage unlike Tesco workers

No idea how they always seem to dodge bad press when other companies always end up in the news for doing things they do. Especially during COVID
