  1. >In addition, in January of this year, the Latvian authorities sent letters to about a thousand Russians living in the country demanding that they leave the country within two weeks.

I’m sure this won’t be the first we hear about this.

  2. Makes sense since Lativa declared russia a terror state

  3. More countries should do this! The Russian people are letting this happen and they should be punished for it!

I know it’s not all of them but it should be!

  4. Imagine countries start doing this to Jews over Israel/Palestine and you’ll understand why doing this for Russians is also unacceptable.

  5. Good, fuck them! If you want to live in another country than you need to make at least some effort to learn the language and the culture.

There’s a story coming out of Sri Lanka about Russians that have come there and started holding “white only” events to exclude the locals. They can take that trash back to Russia!

  6. They are not being kicked out just for being Russian. They just no longer receive special treatment.

They can learn Latvian and apply for a residency permit same as anyone else. Of course the Russians are raging at the injustice because everyone should just speak Russian but A2 level of the local language is really not that bad…

I had to do B1 in my country. This required- oh the inhumanity- going to lessons and making an effort to integrate and respect the local language and culture.

  7. Russians who refuse to integrate with local societies will be the same Russians that Putin will claim are being harassed and discriminated against and warrant military force to “protect” their expats. Latvia is preemptively removing that tactic from Putin.

It’s been Russia’s modus operandi over the last 20 years. Just look at Georgia war and Ukraine.

  8. Latvia said GTFO Russian scum and I support this decision.

  9. Unfortunately when Latvia do this it just gives Russia a platform to spread misinformation and hatred, complex situation

  10. Let’s keep this in perspective. According to Wikipedia, people of Russian ethnicity make up 24% of the population of Latvia which is around 450,000. This article mentions six expulsions with the possibility of up to 1000 more.
All of the expulsions are for people who have failed to integrate into Latvian society.

This is not what ethnic cleansing looks like.

  11. For anyone not getting this, imagine US where immigration laws are actually followed, due rapidly increased national and existential security risk.

Because so far, they were not followed much (due complexities of USSR history), not very strictly, at least.

Nothing more or less. There’s still substantial amount of Russians living in Baltics, up to 20-30% of population and as long as they’re legal (or in process of getting there) and not doing something stupid, like shilling for war publicly, nobody’s batting an eye.

That’s why the article title says “first”. Russians have historically gotten pretty much a free pass even when illegal, because nobody wants to oppress anyone and everybody has ties and roots and relatives and history. But that’s a security gap easy to exploit.

  12. If they stay any longer, they’ll eventually claim Latvia being part of Russia.

  13. This should be done asap in all of eu, imagine letting nazis in 1940 living freely in your country

  14. That’s right, back to third world living in mother russia.
