Hello!

After last year’s presence of Finland and the popularity of their representative’s song, I would like to know what reddit thinks of this year’s candidates.

Lurking through Youtube’s comments I see there’s a lot of supposed animosity against songs in Finnish, somehow.

It seriously looks like there’s an important difference in perception between Finnish people, and people from the rest of the world.

What are the main influencers for the people when deciding what to vote? Any known prejudices against certain person, origin? Biases, political affiliations? Or are finnish people actually voting with their eyes and ears? 😀

  1. UMK has certainly upped the ante this year, and all entries so far are surprisingly good and a clear step up from previous years. My favorites are Bess and Cyan Kicks, but my overall impression is that people mostly like The Rasmus and maybe Cyan Kicks. I guess The Rasmus brings nostalgic vibes to old fans. Bess is trending but I think a lot of people don’t want to send in a song in Finnish.

Tommi Läntinen probably won’t get a lot of votes, as he’s considered a relic from the past and completely wrong style for Eurovision.

I don’t think politics has anything to do with in-country voting in UMK, it’s more of a Eurovision thing.

  2. Having listened to each song, the one that truly stood out the most for me was Sun Numero. It’s in Finnish so it’ll probably not be voted because Finns have had bad results when songs have been in Finnish before at Eurovision.

Kuuma Jäbä was quite unexpectedly good, it will be interesting how it does. .

  3. I actually like all the songs in UMK this year, but none of them have a ‘WOW THIS IS THE ONE’ effect on me. I’m always kinda skeptical with sending songs in Finnish but this year, two of my top three are in Finnish, so I wouldn’t mind it, even though I tend to see Finnish as more of a con than a pro in an Eurovision song. But I believe if the right song ever comes along, the language won’t matter. I’ve liked plenty of songs in Eurovision that aren’t in English, in many different languages ranging from German languages to Romance language and Slavic languages. And if we all just try and stop wondering “will this one have chances to win in Turin?”, choosing the favorite will get slightly easier.

Politics sometimes play a part for me. I don’t think I’d personally vote for a known racist, homophobe or transphobe. Other than that, I don’t really care.

My top three so far is Thank God I’m an Atheist, Ram Pam Pam and Kuuma Jäbä, but I wouldn’t really mind any of the songs being sent. My opinion could still be swayed with the live show and stage presence, though.
