This is the type of topic where I’d want an analyst or someone with industry expertise to explain the pros and cons of various options
Self-identified “free marketeers” and “socialists” alike generally do not offer anything but ideology
So, running out of Options to keep shouting loudly, Labour has decided to fully engage in the ‘Little Boris’ strategy in order to try and sway the working class tories who were scared of immigrants and Europeans back to a party that will try and kill them off just a little bit less than the Neo-Fascists.
Never trust an established member of the authoritarian elite. The electorate did in 2019.
It probably isnt the solution. I think people forget how shit a lot of services were when nationalised and I doubt *any* government is capable of running core national infrastructure effectively.
I know it will be taken as ‘Lol Keith Loves Kapitalism’ but there has to be a solution between allowing businesses to do whatever the hell they like and the government fucking everything up.
“There’s different ways of doing business, but the top-down version of nationalisation I don’t think really works and I’m not in favour of that. We may have to look at the models for ownership of energy companies.”
While nationalising the energy sector might be here or there in order to tackle rising costs.
It seems like we’d need to nationalise it in order to tackle climate change effectively as how we heat our homes is a significant factor in climate change and I have doubts the necessary changes for this will be done via a profit-driven approach.
I aint too clued up on nationalising things. What would really be bad? When you ask people what the best thing about the UK is, right at the top is always NHS. National(ised) Health Service.
So why would nationalising the trains, energy and such be a bad idea?
Nationalisation only works if successive governments are willing to spend serious money and hold themselves to high standards. Reminder: we’re talking about the UK here.
Anyone who remembers British Rail, Gas or Telecom will know what I mean.
The French state owns 83% of edf. Our energy companies are already owned by the government, just not our government

I think there’s an argument to be made for a public option – a publicly owned energy provider that has to balance the books and fund its own investment etc like TfL but doesn’t have to generate a profit for shareholders so in theory should be able to provide a cheaper service, and exists along side private enterprises which have a profit motive to out compete. I don’t really see why nationalisation has to be an all or nothing for the entire industry.
The main benefit of nationalising the energy market is using the government power to push through planning and compulsory purchases.
It would keep the nimby’s from stopping new power generators.
International gas prices being too high can’t really be solved by the UK or nationalisation.
If you want nationalisation, that’s fine. I may even agree about some industries (nuclear for a start). But it’s dishonest if we pretend this would have or could still fix today’s issues.
Sure sure, until they ALL go bump and we run on operator of last resort. Maybe then.
Blue Labour in “are a bunch of Tories” shocker.
He’s not hiding it, you should know what you’re getting from him: more of the same.
Funny. Cos that’s exactly what he promised when running to be leader of Labour. It’s almost as if he’s as at ease lying as Johnson is.
