Chinese police will patrol alongside Hungarian officers after an agreement with Budapest, raising fears of Beijing oppression being meted out in Europe.
Hungary’s interior ministry claimed the deal would improve safety in tourist hotspots or during events that attract large numbers of spectators.
But the plan has drawn criticism from those concerned the agreement will be abused by communist China, which has a lengthy record of human rights abuses.
“Police officers from the two countries will in the future be able to carry out patrol duties together, thus helping to improve communication between the citizens and the authorities of the two countries, and improving internal security and public order,” the ministry of the interior said after the agreement was signed.
The Telegraph understands that some influential EU member states are considering raising the arrangement in the corridors of power in Brussels.
Mr Orban’s opposition to EU sanctions on Russia for the invasion of Ukraine, and his decision to sign energy deals with Vladimir Putin after the war began, have also made him unpopular in the bloc’s de facto capital.
Daniel Freund is a German Green MEP and one of Mr Orban’s fiercest critics in Brussels and Strasbourg.
“Chinese policemen do not enforce law and order but injustice and authoritarian control. They have no business on the streets of an EU member state,” he said.
“Orban is showing his true colours: deep red. There’s nothing to learn from a communist dictatorship except for tyranny and totalitarian control of citizens.”
The EU views China as a partner but also as a “systemic rival”, which has been guilty of industrial espionage and anti-competitive “dumping” of products in its market. Hungary is also a member of Nato, which describes China as a “competitor”.
That makes my decision to spend my holiday in Poland that much easier. Someday, I will visit Budapest. I hope.

This is pretty wild. I can’t imagine having Russian police patrolling the streets here and taking orders from them or being arrested by them *in my own country*. How are Hungarians not outraged by this.
Wouldn’t this also give the Chinese government easy acces to the European security systems (like Europol) that the Hungarian police also use? And how does Europe then prevent its information being used by China to police their former citizens or Europeans of special interest? Its like inviting a disease into your systems..
