Right now I’m 15 years old. For my 14th birthday I got a [NatGeo metal detector](https://www.bresser.de/out/pictures/generated/product/1/640_640_70/6debc9741678e9b0113b7b9f04ede6af_9010500_m_1_v0518.jpg) and only used it once in my parents’ summerhouse yard and several times near the railroad in that area. I later heard there are some laws regarding getting the license in order to be able to metal detect, required age (if I remember correctly you can only get the license when you turn 18?) etc. Is it really true?

Could somebody tell me if it’s legal for me to use a metal detector and if yes, then where this can and cannot be done, maybe a map? Thank you in advance.

  1. They sell tham at Motonet so its legal. Just remmber detecting a WW2 20mm or 30mm round is going to end badly

  2. You need an otsinguvahendi luba and need to notify muinsuskaitseamet before and after searching. You also need to make sure you are not detecting in a protected area

  3. Please read the Heritage Conservation Act https://www.riigiteataja.ee/en/eli/504062019001/consolide

You are not allowed to metal detect in Estonian if you do not have a licence. And licence can only be obtained after passing a mandatory training course. And you need to be 18 for that.

Please don’t be a jerk and respect our laws and heritage/history. We already have a lot of issues with illegal metal detecting.

  4. You living at estonia and study. Still you can not write estonian?

  5. You don’t need the license if you are detecting on your own land or if you are looking for some lost bits and pieces (like lost keys, pieces from agriculture machinery etc).
