  1. It’s normal that women on average live longer than men. Globally, women have a life expectancy that’s 5.1 years higher than men. On this map, we’re going to look at the difference in life expectancy at birth between men and women in Europe. The map show the number of years that women have a higher life expectancy at birth.

Europe is probably the most interesting continent when it comes to the difference in life expectancy between men and women. In most of Europe, the life expectancy for women is 2 to 8 years longer than men. However, when we move east it gets higher. But once we get to Ukraine, Belarus and especially Russia, the difference gets really big. In this part of the Europe, women have a life expectancy that’s 10 years higher than the men. In Russia, it’s even over 11 years. Especially as one goes further east in Russia, as we can see on [this map of Asia](https://landgeist.com/2024/02/20/difference-in-life-expectancy-between-men-and-women-in-asia/). Nowhere in the world is there a bigger gap between the life expectancy of men and women as in Russia.

The difference is smaller in countries like Iceland, Norway, Denmark, Sweden and the Netherlands, where women have a life expectancy that’s only 2 to 4 years longer than men.

The data for this map comes from the [Global Data Lab](https://globaldatalab.org/shdi/) and [Eurostat](https://ec.europa.eu/eurostat/databrowser/view/tgs00101__custom_9648555/default/table?lang=en).

  2. I wonder why Russia is so low. Maybe something is happening in the past year for that

  3. The map says it’s 2021 data.

I reckon the differences for ua and ru have increased by quite a bit since.

  4. Eastern Europe is so embarrassing sometimes… Do fucking better.

  5. Dark blue = Alcoholism and archaic masculinity culture.

Men don’t complain, men must be brave, men must be strong, men must work hard, bla blah.

So do stupid stuff to prove your manliness, rarely visit a doctor when needed, bury your pain in alcohol.

Et voila, you lose 10 years easily.

  6. Why is Russia divided into districts and other countries don’t? I figured other counties have an average number but Russia is put there to make it look worse.
