American woman on a USAF air base in England killed a biker in car crash..she was on the other side of the road and he was 19. It was an accident, but she was immediately flown back to America after police questioned her.
Diplomatic immunity was then asserted because her or her husband were “national security” subjects.
The parents made a huge fuss, our prosecution service issued notices on her and warrants. It ended with her virtually attending court and being convicted (suspended sentences and driving ban) (not really justice but we did alright in the circumstances).
Just thought the Americans were extremely fucking arrogant and out of order.

Actually until 1991 Germany had no choice because it wasn’t fully independent because of [this ](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Treaty_on_the_Final_Settlement_with_Respect_to_Germany)treaty.
West-Germany first also didn’t had an army after WW2 and was officially under military occupation until 1949.
Thats where many of the US bases originated in Germany.
Interestingly the Brits, French, Canadians, Belgians etc. (almost) surrendered all their bases, especially after 1991
