  1. I’ve seen this one, it’s where the Producers put together a show so bad it gets cancelled before even going on.

  2. Gasson has done good work before at the Fringe and in VR where they explore intimacy. They’ve also done every project really walking the walk, seeking out those underrepresented or shamed in society who don’t normally get to either appear in or enjoy theatre and art, including the disabled, the destitute and sex workers.

  3. I have lots of thoughts on this:

I saw it intially being posted about by a relatively big account on Twitter yesterday and this account deliberately screenshotted the most explicit parts from the website for the project and tagged in the likes of Joanna Cherry, JK Rowling, Wings Over Scotland, Scottish Daily Express amongst others. He knew what to do to crack the algorithim and get traction and by doing that, this has become yet another culture war issue and an issue of “oh all those gays, queers and trans folk are dirty, degenerate perverts being egged on by the SNP and the Greens”. Of course it’s For Women Scotland who’ve gone to every media outlet criticisng it too, that’s not a surprise given their past behaviour. We lose sight of the real issue at hand when we look at it through this lens.

We should be looking at this issue through the lens of class. Gasson is clearly someone who’s well-connected within the arts scene and is from a middle class background. To give £85,000 to someone who’s already exceedingly well-connected seems to be the crux of the issue for me. I’m not sure why she needed £85,000 to put on this performance, honestly. I don’t have any moral issues with this performance and couldn’t care less about the content because everyone has freedom of expression but £85,000 to someone who’s already very well connected is yet another example of how the voices of working class people are stifiled by these arts bodies. Creative Scotland is notoriously difficult to get any funding from and I suspect some of it is rooted in identity politics as the performance was being told from a “queer and neurodivergent” perspective and those are, for lack of a better term, trending identifying labels in 2024. I say this as a queer, autistic person.

It’s also important that we remember that this funding came from National Lottery money and *not* money from taxpayers. That’s a point I’d missed and the actors above are deliberately trying to spread misinformation about this being funded by public money.

The way certain outlets and certain characters have lept on this is why we need to not be tempted by culture war narratives, yes, we need to stick up for our marginalised friends and we need to fight for their rights but we also need to be aware that these culture wars are stoked by the chattering classes to divide the working class. Class should be at the forefront of how we approach these things.

I do hope Gasson is ok, mind. I can’t imagine what having the attention of some of Scotland’s most rancid, bigoted people must be like on her mental wellbeing. I hope she’s got friends and loved ones around her to make sure she’s coping with it all.

  4. Would SWERFs just prefer if humans stopped having sex and we all went extinct?

  5. Soo this person is trying to get 85k off the national lottery to produce a cave porno ?

  6. I hope it doesn’t get cancelled. I haven’t been to a decent secret cave sex party for ages.

  7. Can we go back to the old days where artists created art and then sold it?

The good ones could make a living and the shit ones got other jobs.

The really good ones could get a rich sponsor who would support their lifestyle while they made more art.

When did we get to the point where mediocre artists can only create art if they get a grant from the government (AKA the taxpayers)?

Where is the news about Banksy’s latest grant application?

Don’t get me wrong, I am all for funding an artist to recreate a piece (or version) of their art on a massive scale for public consumption like “the skelpies” but if it’s not for the masses or even the majority of art lovers to enjoy, it should not be funded by the public purse.

To go even deeper, we do not live in a society that is conducive to having a lot of artists. We are stuck on the notion that in order to live we must work a 40 hour week for subsistence money in order to provide profit for the very few. If we redress the balance and take the profit for ourselves we would not have to work for so long each week and everyone would have more time to be creative.
