What is the history of why local council boundaries are the way they are?

  1. I don’t really know my self, but all I know is the Qrendi, Mqabba, Kirkop and Safi were all under Żurrieq, thats why Wied iż-Żurrieq is in Qrendi despite its name

  2. I know that Imdina and Imtarfa were part of Rabat, but I would like to know more about the other local councils.

  3. A lot of localities were mostly larger until new towns formed that were once a part of neighbouring cities

For example Xgħajra was once part of Ħaż-Żabbar until it became recognised as its own separate locality

It could be that in the future we would see new localities form as certain localities have regions which have “regions” that are kind of their own little bubble

  4. I’d imagine that most of the local council boundaries were based around the boundaries of the parishes, which predate the formation of local councils in 1993 (in some cases by several hundred years). For example, the dispute regarding Wied iz-Zurrieq was solved by a decree by the archbishop in 1910 which placed it under the jurisdiction of the Qrendi parish. However, there are some notable differences eg. Balluta Bay being split between Sliema and St. Julians and Tal-Mirakli being split between Lija and Attard.

  5. Luqa wanted all the airport for itself. Not gonna share it with Safi or Gudja.
