RAF needs nuclear weapons as backup to Trident, expert says

  1. Given the state of the UK army, yes, it needs a few backups, to make sure at least one of them works

  2. OMG they read my mind I’ve secretly been thinking this lately. Time to resurrect those flying bombs the RAF had til 1993/4?

  3. I think the yanks did just finalise a method of attaching nukes to F35s…

Anyway we should just invest in updating and modernising Trident

  4. Relying on the Americans was always going to leave us high and dry when it mattered. The French had the right idea, either you can field and maintain your own nuclear weapons, or you aren’t a nuclear power.

  5. Um, no.

A plane is easy to shoot down, a sub or ICBM isn’t.

  6. I fucking hate that we have to think about this shit now because of a handful of crazy people with too much power.

  7. We probably should’ve always maintained a 3 armed nuclear arsenal

    Trident
    RAF
    Silos

    And preferably developed them ourselves

  8. I suggest that there are two additional reasons:

    * Our SLBM fleet is an all or nothing option. We have one missile submarine at sea at any time, and if it launches one missile, it will be targeted. Hence the first launch is all you can rely on.

    * Trident relies on American support for maintenance of the missile and the cores. The Republican party (not just Trump, but also the politicians associated with him) could terminate that support at any time. This would not make the missiles immediately unusable (I think – not sure if their GPS navigation could be withdrawn), but it would limit their service lifetime radically.

I would suggest that a priority is free-fall bombs, since integrating them with existing planes is known to be simple. Air-launched missiles would be desirable, but would take longer to get in to service and if we need them, we need them soon.

  9. Zero point in having them though. Expensive and not required. A relic of a bygone age.

  10. Get rid of all nuclear weapons and divert the savings to the NHS. Solve two problems. I should be Prime Minister.

  11. Whats the point. In the eventuality we get to the point we need to use them we are fucked anyway. The cockroaches surviving nuclear anihilation won’t miss a couple of extra nukes that didn’t get launched.

Even if you are all in favour of MAD a fucking backup is 100% pointless.

  12. We *do* have nuclear weapons. All the warheads used by Trident are made in the UK.
What we *don’t* have is alternative delivery methods.
THAT needs to be sorted out.

  13. what’s that the torygraph spouting utter shite about war and nuclear weapons to keep you scared and weak and make you keep voting for them. Don’t believe it.

Also anyone who thinks nuclear weapons are a good idea should listen to Dan Carlins “blitz the destroyer of worlds” or they should Google the boy standing by the creatory.

I saw a boy about ten years old walking by. He was carrying a baby on his back. In those days in Japan, we often saw children playing with their little brothers or sisters on their backs, but this boy was clearly different. I could see that he had come to this place for a serious reason. He was wearing no shoes. His face was hard. The little head was tipped back as if the baby were fast asleep. The boy stood there for five or ten minutes.

The men in white masks walked over to him and quietly began to take off the rope that was holding the baby. That is when I saw that the baby was already dead. The men held the body by the hands and feet and placed it on the fire. The boy stood there straight without moving, watching the flames. He was biting his lower lip so hard that it shone with blood. The flame burned low like the sun going down. The boy turned around and walked silently away

  14. The fact we have over 200 warheads and only on means to launch them has always seemed a little short sighted.

I hope we never have to use them but if we do, this kind of stuff matters.

  15. At this point, i think our allies can handle the ‘blowing up the world with nukes’ part, i would think it more important to focus entirely on anti-nuclear technologies. Because nukes aren’t really a ‘backup’, they’re a final two finger salute to whoever launched nukes towards you first.

  16. As a Pakistani, we are a failed nation in many regard, but our control over our Nukes is pretty impeccable. No missiles plopping into the sea or anything embarrassing like that as its the nuke that is the last thing that is preventing your country from getting turned into Syria/Afghanistan/Iraq/Libya

  17. “So you’re saying there could be billions in taxpayer money up for grabs? Interesting.” expert says

  18. Can they press the red button already, I’m sick of reading war hungry comments from liberals. Like what’s everyone waiting for, build them and then use them, please. Hell, maybe the planet will survive afterwards and life will continue. It would be better than continuing our current trend of rapidly heating the shit out of our ridiculously thin atmosphere. Which is unique in Earth’s 4+ billion year history. Might as well get this human extinction event over with already, god damn.
