Came across this article today, can anyone suggest any workarounds? I am a non-EU student in Uppsala. I was just hoping to get my BankID by the end of this month, and now this bomb dropped.
You need a Swedish citizenship to open BankID?? There better be some alternative to this :/

Well that’s just awful
Call your bank and ask them:

Freja eID is an alternative

From the article
>Nordea writes on its website: “If you don’t have a Swedish passport or a Swedish national ID card issued by the Swedish police, call customer service and we will help you. In a few cases, you have to visit one of our branches for in-person identification.”
>SEB, Handelsbanken, Swedbank and Länsförsäkringar also confirmed to The Local that customers with a personal number and another kind of valid Swedish ID than a passport or police-issued national ID card could still visit their branches in person to get their first BankID. Ålandsbanken said that all of its customers had to make an in-person application to receive their first BankID.
No idea, but one thing can be sure – the system is retarded. I moved out of sweden 15 years ago and I can not get a bankid either, even though i have a swedish passport and id. The system is made to screw anyone outside the normal. Just like anything in sweden as soon as there is a deviation from the default manus, people do not know how to work/act.
Their claims that it is based on security and so on is also stupid, mostly because we all know that the banks are responsible for laundering the most money, not their clients… just see what they did in baltikum.
You don’t have to have a citizenship but you do need a swedish personal number and regarding getting a personal number
“If you are an international student who have a residence permit for at least 12 months or if you are an EU-citizen and admitted to studies for 13 months or more, you are eligible for applying for a Swedish personal identity number.
For that, you need a registration certificate that you get from your university, in order to prove that you are enrolled as a student in Sweden. Consequently, it is not possible to apply before you have registered as a student at the beginning of the semester.”
You still can get it from Swedbank, you just have to go to a branch
It says in the article that regular ID’s issued by Skatteverket for non-citizens are still valid, just not online.
So holders of that type of ID have to go to a bank office in person to get their first BankID, but it can still be done.
You don’t need citizenship. You need a personal number from the Swedish tax office and a national ID card which you can get if you’re a resident. As long as you have a residence permit here you should be able to get a Bank-ID, contact your bank and ask for specific requirements, but I know several international friends (from non EU countries) who recently got both a national ID card and a Bank-ID.
Makes sense. Sweden is continuing on a new path since a few years back, to combat migration and its negative side effects, including ID theft and welfare fraud. Reforms of the public ID system is just one part. More is coming. We’ve only just begun.
What if you simply opened a bank account in Sweden? Would that give you access to BankID?
For many non-banking online services, Freja eID+ is a good alternative.
You need to identify yourself physically with something SIS-approved, like a passport, for getting a LoA3 compliant eID.
As others have said: you dont need to be a citizen, but you need a Swedish ID.
Im a non-Swedish Student here and I did it in the following order:
1. Get the Personal number from skatteverket. Im from an EU country so it was not a super big Deal. I heard that for non-EU students the health insurance can be complicated.
2. Get swedish ID (information on the process can be found on the Website of skatteverket)
3. Get Bank Account. Some banks are easier than others, I had trouble qith swedbank since they require a lot of documents due to a money laundering scandal.
4. Get Bank ID
5. Profit.
It takes time but is possible! Good luck 🙂
