Hi all,
First I have no idea if this is the right sub, but the diy sub for germany is in german, and I can’t explain my problem well enough in german.
Anyway I have just rented a flat that has a bathroom with a sink and over it, where a mirror should be placed, there is a cut out place where the water meter is. Basically the water meter and valves are behind the wall above the sink.
My question is, what kind of mirror can I mount? I assume I need to be able to remove the mirror easily for the meter reading or emergency to shut off the water supply.
There are also lighting wires that I would like to connect to a lit mirror, but that would require drilling.

Long story short, what is the standard thing to do in this case? Do people just mount mirrors and dismount them?

Thank you

  1. Thats some spectacularly dumb construction, im amazed.

Have you checked of these meters are radio enabled? In that case you dont neet to remove the mirror for that at least. If you want a lit mirror, you will always having to disconnect the cable in some way instead of just taking the mirror of the hooks.

For everything else, go look for mirrors you like – if they have lighting, they will have some kind of manual data sheet, and check out which one you can hang there with two hook screews without drilling into that lose plate there.

Before drilling, check carefully where the pipes are.

  2. You can use a suspension rail (in German: “Hängeschiene”). That way, you can just lift the mirror away without any tools whenever needed. Some mirrors or mirror-door bathroom cabinets already come with such a mounting system, but you can also get it as a separate kit at any hardware store (“Baumarkt”) or online, or make it yourself from lumber boards ([french cleat](https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/French_cleat)). The rail, of course, needs to go fully above the access panel in your case.

If you use a mirror-door cabinet, and its size and position allow it, you could also make an appropriately-sized cutout in its back wall, so the access panel can be opened with the cabinet still in place.

  3. Any Baumarkt sells mirrors in different sizes and the fitting mounting brackets. I personally lived nowhere, where the acces was handled differently. The brackets I bought support the bottom of the mirror. The top ones are preventing the mirror from falling over and are suspended with a spring. Push the mirror upwards to remove it.

The meters might be radio controlled anyways so it’s only needed to be accessed if you want to turn off the water.

  4. I got a similar layout at my place. I just bought a simple Spiegelschrank hanging from two screws/hooks, with built-in lighting that’s hooked up to that wire. If I ever need to get to the meters or the valves, I can easily take it down and rest it on the sink.
