👀 “Surrender is not peace. Putin started this war and can end it today. Ukraine does not have such an opportunity”, – Stoltenberg responded to Pope’s statement “We must continue to strengthen Ukraine to show Putin that he will not get what he wants on the battlefield”, he said

  1. If he really believes that, he should be pushing for a radical expansion of aid. Fifty billion to be disbursed over FOUR FUCKING YEARS? Or the US; even if the current package gets approved (I think it will), it’s a multi-year disbursement, less than half of which is earmarked for arms transfers. None of this is going to buy victory.

These western leaders pushing Ukraine to keep fighting but not considering sufficient disbursements to actually retake territory are the true villains here. At this rate, lots of Ukrainians are going to die, and they’re going to lose anyway. “We must continue to strengthen Ukraine” is meaningless if it doesn’t come with a push to increase aid by at least a factor of ten.

  2. Fuck the Pope for even suggesting they should give up and live under the repressive yoke of the tyrant Putin. I bet if it was the Vatican being invaded he would feel differently.

  3. Ukraine doesn’t have much choices. Their army is being driven back; they are running out of men and the young men are refusing to join up. Better to negotiate now and get better terms than later after the Ukrainian army is no more. Ukraine isn’t going to win regardless if there is negotiations or not.

  4. Pope can’t keep his priests out of little boys, how is he going to tell Russia to pull army out of Ukraine?

  5. I feel like they always have the interpreter of the pope said the wrong thing and he’s usually way more reasonable when you actually hears a direct quotes I feel like

  6. I honestly think the Pope sees russia as a horribly overpowered, unbeatable boogeyman, and that the only choice is to just give them dominion over part of the world. It is a very odd take, likely tied to the perception of russia in Argentina that I don’t know enough about.

But Catholic doctrine is very clear: The only just war is a war of defense, and it is only legitimate if there is a chance of success (in other words, it does not create more suffering than it protects from). Well, Ukraine is fighting an eminently just war in that sense, and if victory is measured by reducing horrors for those russia will come for next – whether they are currently occupied or russia is fighting to overrun them -, every single act of resistance, no matter how small, is a victory. When dealing with such a vicious, inhuman occupier, the metric for just resistance is almost unlimited, since you have to match their energy when you measure what is just. We are without a doubt very, very far from even nearing that mark, if it is even possible to reach when it comes to russia. Virtually anything is better than letting them win because the end of their victory would not be peace – but torture, rape, and genocide.

How could one see the emaciated, tortured prisoners of war returning from russia and think that status quo is good enough? One’s judgment must be quite clouded to reach that conclusion. The entire premise of standing down presupposes a rational and fair opponent.

  7. The Pope lost an invaluable opportunity to keep the mouth shut and avoid embarassing himself and all unfortunate people who identify with his religion.

  8. Growing up in Argentina, it seems the pope missed World Peace II during his childhood years. So many countries had the courage to raise the white flag then, it must have been the most peaceful time of all.

  9. Tough words and yet the Ukrainians are running out of shells
