It would be illegal to film himself while driving.
Common sense laws require common sense. If you lack that, critizism is in order.
It’s still illegal if you endanger other drivers. At that speed, your braking distance is 870 m. Unless the Autobahn was unusually empty, that’s absolutely reckless.
Lucky for him he seemed to have good road conditions. At that speed, all it takes is a puddle or a bump in the road to spread your car and yourself over a few hundred meters.
Just take a day trip to a race track, you have safe road conditions, no unexpected traffic and professionals to help fast if you do have an accident. Doing this kind of bs on the Autobahn is basically extended suicide.
That’s why I am for a speed limit of 230 km/h. This is still enough to get quickly in the night from A to B but will stop people from using our safe highways as a race track.
This is why we need a general speed limit…
Stupid. This is why we need a speedlimit. Go to a race track when you want to race for fucks sake
While I agree that this was reckless and dangerous, there are a couple of things that should be noted.
First, this particular car — a limited edition by the way — is normally limited to 380 km/h (which is still stupidly fast). To go faster, the driver has to activate a hidden lever, which can only be done when the car is stationary. It then checks various things like the air pressure in the tyres, runs a diagnostic, and adjusts the suspension and rear spoiler; only then will it go faster than 380 (with a theoretical top speed of 420).
The driver also chose a long straight section of autobahn and was there at 4 am on a Sunday morning.
It’s still reckless, and should definitely not be allowed. But at least the driver took *some* steps to reduce the risk to other drivers.
Hmmmm. I suspect the police could probably still charge him with dangerous driving. Even with an open road at 4am there’s no way that could be considered safe.
Lots of shitty driving Americans on here want to force laws on other countries. Look at the driver training a German gets, look at the training (or lack thereof) an American gets.
Not to mention TÜV vs American “inspection” (IF the state even has them).
Fast STARTS at 140 MPH.
Maybe it’s just me but what’s the point? Sure, he is driving way to fast for an avarage driver but the road conditions are nearly perfect for such a run, his car is made for it and at least he looks like he knows what he does. For sure you can say it’s reckless but it’s not illegal to drive that fast.
For those that say it was irresponsible and dangerous:
4:50am on Sunday
10 cars per 10km so 1 car per 1 km
Good visibility is about 3-4km straight ahead so there is enough time to react.
The Chiron can break from 400 to 0 in 9 sec. within 490m.
All cars are in the far right lane.
There was an earlier drive through the section to make sure there is nothing on the road.
There is a fence along the whole stretch of the highway, so no animals can interfere.
3 people were spotting on 3 bridges for maximum safety.
If you still think it’s irresponsible and dangerous, well, we respect your personal opinion.
What did the guy in the Porsche feel like when he was overtaken at 417?
Here is his testimony, as he was another spotter to make sure everything was safe:
As I drove the yellow Porsche 911 Turbo S at over 200 km / h, I absolutely didn’t understand how the car could overtake me so fast. The moment the Bugatti passed me, was absolutely stunning. It was like a fighter jet flew by. The speed and roar of the engine cannot be forgotten. Absolutely amazing experience.
Like others have said, they took all the possible/necessary precautions, and they did nothing illegal. Talk is cheap. If you really want to discourage something, make a new law.
Cars regularly go 250 or even 300km/h on the German autobahn, and it’s been that way for decades. That was deemed acceptable by lawmakers.
There are other laws that state that you have to be safe about it, so there has been no need to introduce a general speed limit and take away the Germans’ equivalent of the 2nd Amendment: a source of feeling “free” in an otherwise highly regulated nation.
Now that production cars can go 400, it might be time to re-think that strategy, and ask: should there be a hard limit? 350 or 400, maybe?
On the other hand, these discussions have led nowhere in the past, when cars started to have top speeds in excess of 200, and later 300 km/h… so what’s different this time, if anything?
well done
As I wrote on another sub about this exact story: One would need spice fueled precognition powers to be able to drive to an acceptable degree safely at this speed. ~~The car would travel around 1800 metres in between reaction and ultimate stop.~~
Edit: **Aparently the breaking distance is quite lower due to Bugatti high tech. That’s at least reassuring.**
Nobody can travel safely on public roads and without special training at these speeds.
Insanity, nothing more, nothing less. Legal or not.
I saw this video on YouTube earlier lmao.
I’ve always wanted to ask:
What is the logic behind the speed limits, or lack thereof, in the Autobahn?
Didn’t he had used his phone while driving? That is definitely illegal
That’s nearly as fast as a bullet train I’m surprised the roads were that empty to maneuver
One of the few things I hate about my country
Very sanctimonious for the transport ministry to criticise someone for going 417km/h only months after the transport minister’s party (the FDP) fought tooth and nail to prevent a nation-wide speed limit, to the point that the FDP made “no speed limit” a condition of forming a government.
I think I’ve seen this guy. I was driving from Hannover to Frankfurt very early in the morning and a Bugatti Chiron flew past me faster than anything I’ve ever seen. Literally a speck in the rear view mirror to a speck on the horizon in an instant.
Aren’t there any deer living there.
This might, quite possibly, be the fastest speed ever achieved on an Autobahn?
I guess not even fighter planes on emergency runways made out of parts of Autobahn land or take off that fast. xD
So is “Bundesverkehrsministerum” is a single word?
