Thoughts on this? Most comments on the last thread were saying no one in the EU believes Serbia. This doesn’t seem to be the case however, as EU politicians recently have continually appeared biased towards Serbia, effectively giving them 0 repercussions for what would otherwise be unacceptable actions (namely Banjska as well as other recent events)

Some additional information, this is Peter Stano, lead spokesperson for foreign affairs and security policy.
This is pretty shameless. Not sure how they can take a hardline stance against Putin while simultaneously turning a blind eye to the same tactics here.
The EU is in total denial of what Serbia has become under Vučić. Same way they are in denial over what China has become under Xi and the same way they were in denial over what Russia has become under Putin.
It depends. Some members of EU institutions use them to conduct their country’s foreign policy.
Portfolio comissioner or UvdL can’t do much about it since all those appointments are political representation. Meaning we have to have every nationality represented and national capital or rather current ruling party has complete discretion on who to appoint.
Oliver Varhelyi is most notorious for this. He conducts his portfolio more in line with Hungary’s national interest than something we would call EU FoPo as envisioned by UvdL or Borell (who themselves disagree on many topics as well).
I’m not intimately familiar with Stano, but he’s Slovak where government is somewhat Eurosceptic and value wise closer to Orban than EU establishment. It’s possible they lean on turning a blind eye towards terrorist activities in northern Kosovo.
On the other hand I could be wrong and this could be genuine majority opinion. It’s in line with modus operandi of EU in the past.
When Russia launched LNR, DNR and anexed Crimea, EU turned a blind eye, did some localised sanctions, but continued to buy Russian energy and deepen cooperation ( Nord Stream 2)
EU mostly turned a blind eye to Russian invasions of Georgia.
I’m not sure we did anything with regards to Nagorno Karabakh civilian suffering other than express concerns.
At the end of the day Srebrenica happened right in EUs backyard.
There’s not a single counter factual that I can think of where we’ve acted under our own initiative, in time and prevented a disaster.
My advice to you Kosovar, Moldovans, Georgians or any other frontier society that who are under threat of invasion is when you go to vote in the elections. Make sure you vote for the party that doesn’t rely on EU to do the right thing at the right time.
this is probably because our lithium resources are tasty
Something many from Serbia have been complaining about, EU is too pro-Vucic that its amazing. A few years ago they even tricked the opposition into accepting Vucic’s terms for election.
Even after the Banjska incident, they haven’t even said much, I know many Albanians here have been shouting left and right Serbia’s gonna be sanctioned to hell/ bombed again etc. I said nothing would happen, and ..well. nothing has happened.. nor will it happen.
The problem with the current Serbian government is that they are very good at fulfilling whatever the US/EU asks of them. They are delivering weapons to Ukraine (since we are one of few countries that produces the types of weapons that Ukranians are using), they are selling land to EU private investors, they are slowly but efficiently recognizing Kosovo.
We also have huge reserves of that delicious lithium which EU has been pushing to exploit for quite some time. When Merkel was retiring she came to Serbia just to talk about the importance of Lithium..I wonder why
So, yeah even if Vucic’s government launched another 100 attacks on Kosovo or tries to destabilize it, EU will not do anything, they might even give him a pet on the shoulder because he is such a good boy.
Y’all really pushing this narrative huh
