Amtrek has been and always will be a “money pit” for the American Taxpayer. What killed the trains? Low cost airfare and the public highway system.
So here is why I cannot use a train in Texas. My brother n law and his two kids are driving right now to New Mexico to go skiing. They will take with them, a cooler, tons of luggage and all those skis and will take a large SUV up there the entire way and then back.
Once they are there, they will need this large SUV to drive into the mountains to the ski resort and back each night into town because thats where the air bnb is.
If your drive is 900 miles which this is, thats 16 hr drive average 1 way, about $300 gas one way right now at $2.50 a gallon, so you are looking at $600 bucks total cost on the vehicle, now thats not wear n tear or maintenance, just what you will spend.
Ok, so lets look at Amtrek to get to the Rocky Mountains.
Well I ran very many different dates and it came back no rides regardless, said no train available. Hmmm, let try ANYTHING that might work.
Ok, the “Useless Train” had some tickets from Houston to New Orleans I just did that trip in my truck with 3 passengers, and its about $250 round trip in gas, 5 hours one way.
Amtrek can do that trip, for $200 per person, Ok, not too bad, and the train will take 9 hours to make the trip, 4 hours slower than a car.
OK Texas, the race is on! Who will complete their bullet train first: California or Texas?
