All for it, but we just overwhelmingly voted for Geert Wilders over here in the Netherlands, who doesn’t believe in 2% defense spending, and wants to bring all our troops back to the Netherlands, so they can ‘protect’ our border. He also wants to stop all aid to Ukraine, so we can invest that money in our own people. None of what I just said is a joke.
Sorry, Mr. Polish President, but don’t count on the Netherlands for helping to defend Europe.
Parroting bullshit trumpisms
I’d also like to see 3%.
Reason: I want to see more airshows, which would happen if society was more militarized.
Make that 4.
For what? We don’t need a bigger army against Russia, and China has even less force projection capabilities than Russia. Are there other enemies threatening the European mainland?
We need a modern, united EU army with focus on keeping the 10+ years air superiority that we have now.
The EU will not fight against Russian artillery or tanks in an open war in the next 2 decades for sure – we would annihilate Russia within a week from the air.
Russia can use green men to invade Baltics as they did in Ukraine, but an open war against the EU / NATO is literal suicide for them.
5% until Russia is a ruined economic wasteland (0-5 years) unable to produce a single tank then down to 2%.
We have a significant technological advantage over Russia so lets not go overboard.
Manage the 2% first and then go from there
Jaysus are scared shitless
EU countries societies aren’t willing to sacrifice anything from they wellbeing to help defend themselves until ease with NATO starts. Not the money, not the time, not the skills. That’s why I think war is imminent.
Yes, NATO has much of technological advantage. But but not much ammo for high tech toys. If the war starts and we won’t decapitate head of ruSSia terror in less than month at bests. We’re screwed. I’m not even sure if we know how to do it.
While I get the sentiment, that’s just not realistic nor practical at all. It makes sense for Poland, because the economy is relatively small and it needs to compensate for that, but for western Europe that’s not the case.
For Germany that would be around 135 billion per year, almost as much as the entire GDP of Ukraine.
That’s enough money that Germany could run multiple nuclear super carrier strike groups, a nuclear triad, stealth bombers, and still have money to spare.
Such a military would not align with the German constitution and isn’t even needed against Russia, who already is outclassed by NATO ten fold.
The current budgets are more than sufficient, NATO simply needs to bolster air defense systems, production capacities, and general stocks.
not for Canada, we stickin to the 1% deal cause we got no invasion threats here, good luck y’all
NATO is a grift
We should probably do other more important things to fight Russia instead of spending more in war toys, such as not buying their freaking gas maybe?
European NATO spending 3% would be unheard of. It’ll never happen, but in reality it would be such a large amount of money that in PPP terms, the EU+UK would overtake the US for military spending ($918 billion, to the US $860 billion).
Poland and the Baltic countries have continuously shown high commitment to NATO when it comes to defence expenditures, and rightly so. The only way to tackle a rogue state like Russia is with a strong NATO, and 3 percent defence spending is hopefully undertaken by most of the alliance
At minimum hopefully
How about no?
I’d be in favour of reducing it to 1.5% tho.
lol
Because they’re bricking it right now
I grew up in Eastern Europe and I can certainly understand the Poles for not wanting to be under the Russian boot ever again. If only all other countries in the region shared Poland’s attitudes.
Money and all is great but where are we going to get the people?
My brother in Christ, we can’t even get Trudeau to meet 2%
I’m not European but I’m all for it… Duda is based af and he’s my second favorite President in Europe (after Zelensky). This will be good because while I, an American, want the US to fight and defend NATO (and fight directly in Ukraine), US has other obligations and we are already stretched thin as a military. US can and should provide some direct help to Europe but Europe should provide most of the effort when it comes to the hypothetical war against Russia.
US has Middle East and Asia (Korea, Taiwan) to worry about and we can’t be stretched thin. Europe and Canada need to provide all that they can and take charge of Europe vs Russia while the US can help, our role in Europe will ideally be more limited.
I’m not trying to sound like Trump… I care about Europe and NATO and Ukraine even more, but if the US miscalculates and puts all effort into Europe (Ukraine) the Asia Pacific can turn into a VERY difficult situation for the US and our allies there.

May we all follow suit.
