Sources diverge, but if it’s true that it cost Russia 40-50 000 men to take Avdiivka, it’s bizarre. It’s 10 times the total american losses in the entire Iraq war – for one town. Russia is swimming in cement.
They are currently constructing an extensive multi-layered defense network all along the front lines, similar to the surovikin line that Ukraine had problems getting through last summer.
At first i thought that was why the russian advances were halted but it turns out that russia has not even reached these defensive lines.

Russia are just consolidating their gains and probing forward.
They will mass forces outside another strategically important target in the next few weeks, suck Ukraine into another in winnable battle of attrition and prevent them from going on the offensive.
It is slow, ugly, and brutal but Ukraine just doesn’t have a counter strategy that works.

I would be very concerned about a large Russian offensive starting sometime in May once the spring mud hardens up.
This war is not a stalemate. Just because things have seemed static does not mean that cannot change. And the conditions for it to change are materializing in favor of Russia with lagging US aid.
Since there’s more or less a stalemate, it’s time to end the war by means of negotiation, not by sending more people to useless deaths.
