Hello fellas,

Hope you all are doing well. Need some help as I am not aware about the rule here.

At this kind of situation, should I merge at point A or point B?

Today, I have merged at point A and honked by a car which was on the other lane.

Thanks in advance.

  1. I’m sure I’ll be corrected, just my understanding based on learning to drive in the UK, but I would suggest that it depends. If the road were as pictured, relatively clear with free flowing traffic, point b would be the more courteous place to merge. If on the other hand you’re in stationary traffic it is better to make use of all available space and merge in turn as it minimises the tailback.

If you zoomed up underneath the traffic in the left lane and then cut in at the last moment you probably deserved to get honked. It’s not about the letter of the regulations, it’s about being courteous to other road users.

  2. Always point A, ‘Reißverschlusssystem’, it keeps the flow without interruption. Many people don’t understand this unfortunately. The merging lane will narrow at the end, naturally helping you merge, alternating each lane.

Edit: apply with analytic thinking. If it is like in the picture, where there is more than enough space in the left lane and I am the only one in the right lane, than it is fine to merge early.
