They should just keep it under wraps so people don’t go and mess it up. It would be awesome if the coral reef continues to thrive and grow in the pacific northwest.
LEAVE IT ALONE!!!! DONT FUCKING TOUCH IT OR DO ANYTHING TO IT FOR GODS SAKE!!!
Climate change means the habitable zones shift. Overfishing from chinese vessels will bulldoze this shit in a month if they find it.
Whoa thats cool
Few points, no where does it state that this coral reef should not exist apart from them saying it’s the most northern reef in the pacific. There isn’t much new about finding new northern extents.
These reefs are pretty common in other parts of the world, I’ve personally within my team discovered and mapped dozens of them off Norway.
Biggest impact on them is trawling, deep seas are pretty stable, they grow a few mm a year and plenty of these reefs are very very old. It would take a current alteration via climate change as opposed to temperature change most likely to be in impact
Also, the name Lophelia is outdated. The new scientific name is desmophyllum pertusum.
