Can someone explain to me why Germany as a whole refuses to move away from the fax machine?
I work for a German company that has been around for many decades. I believe this piece of news.
Lol… I was discussing from Romania with some public institutions in Germany. My superiors said that I would be better to handle such discussions as the requirments and practices were similar in regard to the beaurocracy. I was asking for their email adress and they were giving me the fax number for some important notices. Also they wanted a singed document scanned and sent tot them via e-mail instead of an email through which I was saying the same things…
Of course the German institutions were much better than the Romanian ones, but I was expecting that these had more things in common with other countries in Western/ Northern Europe, not with f Romania…
Here’s an interesting question considering Germany spends more than France on defense in absolute terms: Where the fuck has that money been going? And is the latest Zeitenwende increase following it in that black hole?
This happened once during an exercise during last year.
Germans play 4D chess… who can hack fax machines??? Hackers nowadays have never seen one.
Sometimes you do have to cut the cord and hit the ground running. That time is long over due.
Article is paywalled for me
Sometimes I go to an important office for something (not Germany) and they run windows XP. Boomers don’t like change.
Even when they radio they ask what we are thinking about
It’s kinda funny though that – as always – the media exclusively amplifies negative aspects, and cherry picks and distorts aspects like the fact that one time last year there was an incident where the Bundeswehr couldn’t communicate with allies during an exercise, which the FT turns into ‘German military cannot radio allies’. Same with the completely overblown ‘broomstick’ incident a couple of years ago.
The article refers to the annual report of the Bundestag’s (federal parliament’s) commissioner for the armed forces – it has become a routine occasion for highlighting all the chronic issues and ailments the Bundeswehr has been suffering from in the last decades.
The report focuses on ongoing issues which I’ll leave to the (international) media and r/europe users to dissect with great satisfaction, but here are some positives that naturally no one sees fit to mention:
a) A third of all procurement processes have been positively affected and accelered by the major reform the ministry recently initiated.
b) Soldiers report marked improvements in the availability of personal equipment (clothing of all sorts, communication, protective equipment etc.), with lockers apparently overflowing and not enough storage space being available.
c) The Bundeswehr has initiated the purchases of three new ocean surveillance planes, 22 PzH2000, six IRIS-T-SLM air defence systems, 18 Leopard 2 A8 MBTs, 60 heavy transport helicopters, 82 light attack helicopters, 50 Puma IVFs, and started operating its own naval shipyard.
Impenetrable defence against Gen Z hackers
A enemy cannot join a Zoom call if it’s a fax message.
Taps forhead.
At this point shouldn’t a fax be more secure than digital messages because no one uses that anymore?
I never used fax until I moved to Germany. Only saw them in TV shows before.
Wait…. They are even more antiquated than the Italian public administration? Wtf?
Well, there goes eveyone’s fear of AIs stealing their job.
What’s wrong with Fax? So you don’t have to print and bring the papers.
Fax – point to point – that’s it.
I work with this type of stuff all the time and the Canadian Government also uses secure fax.
The line is as thick as your thumb and it is a robust unit. Absolutely secure.
And make unencrypted Zoom calls with senior military officials. It’s almost Russian level military incompetence.
Dial up much?
Faxes are still used in Canada in hospitals and clinics. You are not alone!
Rather ironic when you consider how technology gave them a substantial tactical advantage during the beginning of World War 2.
here in the US Faxes are Hippa Compliant as its hard to intercept a fax and copy it.
I work for a German global player…yeah, we also still use fax for certain things 🤷♂️
I have to laugh every time they talk about their huge progress and efforts in digitalisation 🤣
This article is click bait. I have been on exercise with the Germans and I did in fact speak to a German JTACer, on the radio.
Fax machines are the new Enigma devices, with the cipher being anyone above the age of 30
It’s as bad as I thought.
No wonder they are allies with Japan
Germany, really rooting for losing another world war

They really cherrypicked the most clickbaity stuff from a [175 pages report](https://www.bundestag.de/resource/blob/993118/d957df8ef777e37acac0b922c533433d/jahresbericht_2023.pdf).
>German military still faxes documents and
I cannot find this in the report at all.
>cannot radio allies, official warns
